Yearning (1990 Film)
Yearning is a 1990 Armenian drama film based on Hrachya Kochar's novel Nostalgia. Directed by Frunze Dovlatyan. Plot (From IMDb) The story takes place in 1930s Soviet Armenia. Arakel Aloyan is a naive peasant who left his homeland in Western Armenia after the Armenian genocide of 1915, having witnessed his village burnt and women raped. All the efforts of family members to persuade Arakel to accustom himself to a new life in Soviet Armenia are in vain whilst he suffers from nostalgia. After having a vision one sleepless night, Arakel crosses the Soviet-Turkish border, visits his village ("to visit the tombs of my parents, to kiss the remaining walls of our village church"), and is interrogated by Kurdish cavalrymen who report that his village no longer exists. After returning, he's captured by the NKVD (Soviet state security) and accused of "spying against the state." Frunze Dovlatyan
Frunze Vaghinaki Dovlatyan ( hy, Ֆրունզե Վաղինակի Դովլաթյան; May 26, 1927 in Gavar – August 30, 1997 in Yerevan) was an Armenian film director and actor. People's Artist of USSR (1983). Biography Frunze Dovlatyan was born in Gavar, Soviet Armenia. He was a theater actor before becoming a director. One of the leading Armenian directors, Frunze Dovlatyan has started as actor in Armenian provincial theatres since 1941 and then in Gabriel Sundukian Drama Theatre of Yerevan, where he was awarded Stalin Prize (major award of that time) for the role of ''Hrair'' in the play "These Stars are Ours", Russian version "Эти Звезды Наши". Hrachya Kochar
Hrachya Kochar (; 19 January 1910 – 2 May 1965), born Hrachya Kochari Gabrielyan, was an Armenian writer and publicist. He won the first state prize of the Armenian SSR for his novella ''Nahapet'', which was adapted into a Nahapet, film of the same name in 1977. Biography Hrachya Gabrielyan was born in 1910 in the Ottoman Empire, in the village of Kumlubucak (now located in the Taşlıçay district of the Ağrı Province of Turkey), historically located in the province of Bagrevand in Western Armenia. He lost both of his parents the Armenian genocide: his mother died during their flight to Eastern Armenia, while his father, Kochar, also known as Kocho, who fought in Andranik, Andranik's army, died in 1918. Hrachya Kochar chose his pseudonym in honor of his father. Along with other people from his village, Hrachya managed to escape the massacres and reach Eastern Armenia.
