Yamaha XT 500
The Yamaha XT500 is a twin-valve single-cylinder enduro-adventure motorcycle made by Yamaha from 1975 until 1989. It shares its power plant with the street version SR500 and its off-road brother, the Yamaha TT500. All parts such as the transmission and chassis were produced in Japan. The first XT 500 was shown at the US dealer convention in September 1975, and in Europe in the summer of 1976. The bike became an instant success and was produced until 1981 when it was replaced by four-valve engines. It laid the ground for the later range of XT bikes ranging from 125 cc ( XT125) to the current 660 cc (Yamaha XT660Z Ténéré) and contributed largely to Yamaha's image. In France alone, 62,000 XT 500s were sold from 1976 to 1990. The XT won the first big African rallies, which were on the rise in the late seventies. Yamaha XT660R
The Yamaha XT660 is dual-purpose on/off road motorcycles released by Yamaha Motors as a replacement for the XT600. It is a development of the original XT series ('X' stands for 4 strokes, 'T' for TRAIL), a line of motorcycles inspired by those used on the Paris Dakar rally. The first XT was released in 1976. The XT660R is the standard Enduro model ('R' stands for racing). Sten Lundin
Sten Lundin (20 November 1931 – 3 June 2016) was a Swedish professional motocross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1955 to 1966. Motocross career Lundin won the F.I.M. 500cc motocross world championship in 1959 riding a Monark. In the 1960 world championship, he finished in second place, two points behind Bill Nilsson. In 1961 he recaptured the 500cc world championship riding a Monark which had been re-badged as a Lito. He dropped to third place in the world championship in 1962, finished second to Rolf Tibblin in the 1963 world championship and, third in the 1964 world championship. Torsten Hallman
Torsten Hallman (born 17 October 1939) is a Swedish former professional motocross racer and business entrepreneur. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1959 to 1971. A four-time world champion, Hallman led a contingent of Swedish riders that dominated the motocross world championships in the early 1960s. His battles with Belgium's Joël Robert were considered some of the best in the history of the championships. Between 1964 and 1968, the pair finished first or second to one another in the world championship four times. Hallman played an integral role in the introduction of the sport of motocross in the United States. After his racing career, He established a successful off-road racing apparel company. Hallman was recognized for his influential role in the development of American motocross in 2000 when, he was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. Motocross World Championship
FIM Motocross World Championship is the premier championship of motocross racing, organized by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), divided into two distinct classes: MXGP and MX2. Race duration is 30 minutes plus two laps per race. The series runs 18 events with two races per class at each round. History The FIM Motocross World Championship is a worldwide motocross series sanctioned by the F.I.M. It was inaugurated in 1957 using a 500 cc engine displacement formula. 1977 FIM Motocross World Championship Season
The 1977 FIM Motocross World Championship was the 21st F.I.M. Motocross Racing World Championship season. Summary Heikki Mikkola rejoined the 500cc class in 1977 after winning the 1976 250cc world championship. Now riding for the Yamaha factory racing team, he continued his old rivalry with Suzuki's Roger De Coster. Mikkola won 12 motos to clinch the title ahead of Suzuki teammates De Coster and Gerrit Wolsink. Brad Lackey switched to the Honda racing team and became the first American to score an overall victory in a 500cc motocross world championship Grand Prix when he won the British Grand Prix. Bengt Åberg
Bengt Edvin Åberg (26 June 1944 – 6 March 2021) was a Swedish professional motocross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1966 to 1979. He was a two-time FIM 500cc Motocross World Champion. Biography Åberg was born in Gävleborg County, Sweden. He was one of the top riders in the Motocross Grand Prix World Championships during the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1968 he was part of the Swedish team that won the Trophée des Nations. He won the FIM 500cc Motocross World Championship in 1969 and 1970 while riding for the Husqvarna factory racing team. Åberg was a member of three victorious Swedish teams at the Motocross des Nations in 1970, 1971, and 1974. In 1974, 1975 and 1976, he rode for the Bultaco factory in the 500cc class. Paris–Dakar Rally
The Dakar Rally (or simply "The Dakar"; formerly known as the "Paris–Dakar Rally") is an annual rally raid organised by the Amaury Sport Organisation. Most events since the inception in 1978 were staged from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal, but due to security threats in Mauritania, which led to the cancellation of the 2008 rally, events from 2009 to 2019 were held in South America. Since 2020, the rally has been held in Saudi Arabia. The event is open to amateur and professional entries, amateurs typically making up about eighty percent of the participants. The rally is an off-road endurance event. The terrain that the competitors traverse is much tougher than that used in conventional rallying, and the vehicles used are typically true off-road vehicles and motorcycles, rather than modified on-road vehicles. Rally Raid
Rally raid, also known as cross-country rallying, is a form of long distance off-road racing that takes place over several days. The length of the event can be as short as 2–3 days for a cross-country baja to as long as 15 days with marathon rallies like the Dakar Rally; with other cross-country rally events lasting 4–5 days. With skill in navigation being key, the driving skill and endurance of riders, drivers, co-drivers, and machines are put to the test. The total distance covered can be anywhere between 600 km to over 5,000 km with terrain ranging from sandy dunes, forest roads, mountain roads, and dry river beds; among others. Yamaha XT660Z Ténéré
The Yamaha XT660Z Ténéré is a dual-sport motorcycle manufactured from 2008 to 2016 by Yamaha. It featured a single-cylinder engine manufactured by Minarelli, which was also used in the XT660R, XT660X, MT-03 ( 2006–2014), Jawa 660 Sportard, Jawa 660 Vintage and Aprilia Pegaso 650 Trail (post 2007) models. Though not sold in the US or Canada and some 40 kilos heavier than the original, air-cooled Ténéré from the early 1980s, many fans saw the 660Z as a return to form for Yamaha, following the demise of the air-cooled Teneres and the less popular 5-valve iteration which replaced them.
