Yōkaiden
''Yōkaiden'' is an original English-language manga written and illustrated by Nina Matsumoto and published by Del Rey Manga. The story features Hamachi, a boy fascinated by the Japanese monsters called ''yokai''. When one of these monsters steals his grandmother's soul, he travels into their world to retrieve it. The first volume was published on November 18, 2008, and as of November 24, 2009, two volumes were released. Plot Although ''yōkai'' (a class of Japanese monsters) are feared and hunted, Hamachi believes that humans can peacefully coexist with the spirits. When Hamachi releases a ''kappa (folklore), kappa'' from one of his grandmother's traps, having to remove its leg to do so, it later returns for revenge against his grandmother and steals her soul. Hamachi then travels into the ''yokais world to retrieve her soul. However, he could end up trapped in the realm as well. Nina Matsumoto
Nina Matsumoto (born 18 November 1984) is a Japanese-Canadian cartoonist, also known as "space coyote", and most known for creating the comic book series ''Yōkaiden'' for Del Rey Manga. She created the webcomic ''Saturnalia'', and has worked as a penciller on '' Simpsons Comics'' and '' The Last Airbender Prequel: Zuko's Story'' graphic novel. She is also the artist and co-creator of Sparks!, a graphic novel series for Scholastic Books. ''Saturnalia'' was a science fiction comic by Nina Matsumoto, also known as space coyote. It won in the 2004 Web Cartoonist's Choice Awards. The story is on indefinite hold while Matsumoto is working on her recently published series, ''Yōkaiden'', as well as other projects. There are no plans to continue the story at this time; however if it does then it may be redrawn with the intentions of being published. Del Rey Manga was the manga-publishing imprint of Del Rey Books, a branch of Ballantine Books, which in turn is part of Random House, the publishing division of Bertelsmann. History Del Rey Manga was formed as part of a cross-publishing relationship with Japanese publisher Kodansha. The fourth wall is a performance convention in which an invisible, imaginary wall separates actors from the audience. While the audience can see through this ''wall'', the convention assumes the actors act as if they cannot. From the 16th century onward, the rise of illusionism in staging practices, which culminated in the realism and naturalism of the theatre of the 19th century, led to the development of the fourth wall concept.
