Yves Gabias (December 8, 1920 – March 25, 2002) was a politician from Quebec, Canada. Background He was born on December 8, 1920 in Montreal and was a lawyer. He was the father of Liberal MNA André Gabias. Member of the legislature He ran as a Union Nationale candidate in the district of Trois-Rivières in 1960 and won. He was succeeding Maurice Duplessis who had died a year before. He was re-elected in 1962 and 1966. Legislative Assembly Of Quebec
The Legislative Assembly of Quebec (French: ''Assemblée législative du Québec'') was the name of the lower house of Quebec's legislature from 1867 to December 31, 1968, when it was renamed the National Assembly of Quebec. At the same time, the upper house of the legislature, the Legislative Council, was abolished. Both were initially created by the Constitution Act, 1867. It was the Union Nationale government of Premier Jean-Jacques Bertrand that passed the "Bill 90" legislation to abolish the upper house, but earlier attempts had been made by earlier governments. The presiding officer of the Assembly was known in French as ''orateur'', a literal translation of the English term, ''speaker''. When the Assembly was renamed so too was the title of its presiding officer, becoming known as the President. Today, Quebec has a unicameral legislature, whose single house is the National Assembly. André Gabias
André Gabias (born May 20, 1956) is a politician in Quebec, Canada. He holds a degree in law from the Université de Sherbrooke, and has been a member of the Quebec Bar since 1981. Since 1984, he has taught law at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières and is a member of the National Assembly of Quebec. He represents the electoral district of Trois-Rivières and is a member of the Quebec Liberal Party (QLP). Born in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Gabias was first elected in the 2003 election, and originally served as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Public Security. In the spring of 2005, he was appointed as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade. Jean-Jacques Bertrand
Jean-Jacques Bertrand (; June 20, 1916 – February 22, 1973) was the 21st premier of Quebec, from October 2, 1968, to May 12, 1970. He led the Union Nationale party. Member of the legislature Bertrand served as Member of the Legislative Assembly for the District of Missisquoi from 1948 until his death in 1973. Member of the Cabinet He served as Minister of Lands and Forestry from 1958 to 1960 and briefly as Minister of Youth and Social Welfare until his party, the Union Nationale lost the provincial election in 1960. Bertrand tried to become leader of the Union Nationale in 1961, but was defeated by his colleague Daniel Johnson, Sr., the MLA for the district of Bagot. In 1966, the Union Nationale was put back in office and Premier Daniel Johnson, Sr. appointed Bertrand to his Cabinet. 1966 Quebec General Election
The 1966 Quebec general election was held on June 5, 1966, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec, Canada. The Union Nationale (UN), led by Daniel Johnson, Sr, defeated the incumbent Quebec Liberal Party, led by Jean Lesage. In terms of the number of seats won, the election was one of the closest in recent history, with the UN winning 56 seats to the Liberals' 50. Generally, Quebec's first past the post electoral system tends to produce strong disparities in the number of seats won even if the popular vote is fairly close. In this case, the most popular party did not win the most seats in the chamber. The Liberals won 6.5% more votes, but were denied a third term because the rural part of the province, where the Union Nationale did well, were slightly over-represented in the legislature. The 1962 Quebec general election was held on November 14, 1962, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Quebec, Canada. The incumbent Quebec Liberal Party, led by Jean Lesage, was re-elected, defeating the '' Union Nationale'' (UN) led by Daniel Johnson, Sr. In an unusual move, the election was called just two years after the previous 1960 general election. Lesage sought a mandate for the Nationalization of the electricity industry, with the slogan Maîtres chez nous (Masters in Our Own Home), declaring it a single issue important enough to stake his political career on it. A few days before the election, the ''Union Nationales chief organizer André Lagarde was arrested for fraud. The 1960 Quebec general election was held on June 22, 1960, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec, Canada. It was one of the most significant elections in Quebec history, rivalled perhaps only by the 1976 general election. Trois-Rivières (provincial Electoral District)
Trois-Rivières is a provincial electoral district in the Mauricie region of Quebec, Canada that elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. It includes part of the city of Trois-Rivières, including most of the territory of the city as it existed prior to its 2002 amalgamation and expansion. It was created for the 1867 election, and an electoral district of that name existed even earlier: see Trois-Rivières (Lower Canada) and Trois-Rivières (Province of Canada electoral district). In the change from the 2001 to the 2011 electoral map, its border with the Maskinongé electoral district was adjusted, resulting in simultaneously gaining and losing different parts of the city of Trois-Rivières.
