Yakov Yurovsky
Yakov Mikhailovich Yurovsky (; Unless otherwise noted, all dates used in this article are of the Gregorian Calendar, as opposed to the Julian Calendar which was used in Russia prior to . – 2 August 1938) was a Russian Old Bolshevik, revolutionary, and Soviet Chekist (secret policeman). He was best known as the chief executioner of Emperor Nicholas II of Russia, his family, and four retainers on the night of 17 July 1918. Biography Early life Yakov Mikhailovich Yurovsky was the eighth of ten children born to Mikhail Yurovsky, a glazier, and his wife Ester Moiseevna (1848–1919), a seamstress. Šimon Jurovský, original name Shimon Weiss-Nägel (born 8 February 1912 in Uľanka, Banská Bystrica, Czechoslovakia - died 8 November 1963 in Prague, Czechoslovakia), was a Slovak composer of ballet, chamber, stage and film music. Gary Yourofsky (; born August 19, 1970) is an American animal rights activist and lecturer. He has had a major influence on contemporary veganism. Yourofsky was sponsored by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) between the years 2002 and 2005, and has given many public lectures promoting veganism. In 2010, Yourofsky's popularity quickly accelerated around the world (especially in Israel) following the release of a YouTube video of him giving a speech at the Georgia Institute of Technology, as the video gained millions of views and has been translated into tens of different languages. Yourofsky has been admired by many, and criticized by others for his alleged extreme views. He has been arrested 13 times between the years 1997 and 2001, and has spent 77 days in a Canadian maximum security prison in 1999, after raiding a fur farm in Canada and releasing 1,542 minks in 1997.
