Ystrad
Ystrad (also known as Ystrad Rhondda or Ystrad-Rhondda) is a village and community (Wales), community (and electoral ward) in the Rhondda Fawr valley, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. Description As a community and ward Ystrad contains the neighbouring district of Gelli, Rhondda, Gelli. Ystrad is a former coal mining village which was once housed the most profitable collieries belonging to the Cory brothers. Ystrad is long and narrow, a main road where most amenities can be found, and a series of smaller residential streets lined with the terraces associated with the area. The majority of housing stock is the classic South Wales valleys terrace with infills of new build. The River Rhondda, Rhondda Fawr River runs through the village, separating it from Gelli on the southern bank. Like most former coal mining communities in the South Wales Coalfield, Ystrad is remarkably self-contained. Rhondda
Rhondda , or the Rhondda Valley ( cy, Cwm Rhondda ), is a former coal mining, coalmining area in South Wales, historically in the county of Glamorgan. It takes its name from the River Rhondda, and embraces two valleys – the larger Rhondda Fawr valley (''mawr'' large) and the smaller Rhondda Fach valley (''bach'' small) – so that the singular "Rhondda Valley" and the plural are both commonly used. The area forms part of the South Wales Valleys. From 1897 until 1996 there was a local government district of Rhondda. The former district at its abolition comprised sixteen Community (Wales), communities. Since 1996 these sixteen communities of the Rhondda have been part of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough. Ystrad Rhondda Railway Station
Ystrad Rhondda railway station is a railway station serving Ystrad Rhondda, Ystrad in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. It is located on the Rhondda Line. Alphabetically, it is the last station in the UK with the first being Abbey Wood railway station, Abbey Wood station in southeast London. Ystrad Rhondda Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union team based in Ystrad in the Rhondda Valley. Ernest Zobole
Ernest Zobole (25 April 1927 – 27 November 1999) was a Welsh painter and art teacher. Zobole's paintings, originally oil on canvas, later switching to oil on board, reflected the industrial setting of the Rhondda Valleys. A member of the ''Rhondda Group'', a circle of artists from the area, Zobole is seen as one of Wales' "most important artists...one of the visionary artists of Wales". Early history Zobole was born in the village of Ystrad, Rhondda, in 1927, to Italian immigrants who had moved to Wales in 1910. He was educated at Porth Grammar School, before spending five years training at the Cardiff College of Art. His time at Cardiff College was notable for the daily commute from the Valleys to Cardiff, as it was used as an opportunity for Zobole and five fellow students to discuss and critique their art work. Jill Evans (born 8 May 1959) is a Plaid Cymru politician who served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Wales from 1999 to 2020. She was the first person to use the Welsh language in debate at the European Parliament. Nebo, Ystrad Rhondda
Nebo, Ystrad Rhondda was the first Baptist chapel in the Rhondda Valleys. Founded in 1786, and known as Ynysfach, its first minister was one Thomas Edwards. The name was changed to Nebo in the early part of the nineteenth century. Nebo was the mother church to numerous other chapels in the valley including Hebron, Ton Pentre in 1868, and Noddfa, Treorchy which subsequently became much larger than Nebo in terms of membership. Gelli, Rhondda
Gelli is a village in the Rhondda Fawr valley, in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taff, Wales, situated on the southern bank of the Rhondda Fawr River. Gelli is a former coal mining village which is a district of the community of Ystrad. Early and industrial history The village of Gelli takes its name from a farm that was once found in the area, which translates from the Welsh language roughly as 'small wood or copse'. Before the industrialisation of the area there were few settlements in the area, mainly small agricultural and farm buildings. Archeological finds in the area have provided proof of earlier populations, mainly Bronze Age, though Gelli does house one of only two definite Romano-British finds in the Rhondda Valleys. Roman finds in the uplands of Glamorgan are scarce, but the settlement at Hen Dre'r Gelli, excavated in 1903, is the only undefended settlement of its type in the Rhondda. Ben Bowen Thomas
Sir Ben Bowen Thomas (18 May 1899 – 26 July 1977) was a Welsh civil servant and university President. He served as Permanent Secretary to the Welsh Department of the Ministry of Education from 1945 to 1963, and was President of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth from 1964 to 1975. In June 1977 Thomas was awarded an Honorary Degree from the Open University as Doctor of the University. Thomas was born in 1899 in Ystrad Rhondda, and was educated at Rhondda Grammar School, the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth and Jesus College, Oxford. Influenced by the adult education movement, he spent five years as a university tutorial class lecturer before becoming the first warden of Coleg Harlech when it was founded by Dr Thomas Jones in 1927. He remained there until 1940, when he moved to the Ministry of Labour and then the Ministry of Education.
