Ypacaraí Festival
The Ypacaraí Festival has been held in the city of Ypacaraí, Paraguay, since 1971, between August and September. It is a folklore festival organized with great emphasis on all kinds of cultural manifestations. The purpose is to keep alive the memory of great people who have become icons in diverse artistic disciplines. Above all, it is to promote appreciation of art. History The Festival of the Lake, as it is called, started in 1971, the initiative of a group of Ypacaraí citizens who were fond of folklore, with the purpose of celebrating the anniversary of the foundation of the district. The first festival was organized in September. It presented a valid alternative to encourage a love of the things that were authentically national, against the new musical tendencies of foreign origin that had fast acceptance among young people. Elvio Romero
Elvio Romero (1926-2004) was a Paraguayan poet, active in the 1940s and 1950s. Early life Elvio Romero was born in Yegros, Paraguay in 1926. At a young age he became associated with fellow Paraguayan literary figures Hérib Campos Cervera, Josefina Plá, and Augusto Roa Bastos. Career A Communist militant, Romero was forced into exile in Argentina alongside many others after the end of Paraguayan Civil War in 1947, at the age of 20. His time in exile was a strong theme in Romero's subsequent work. He returned to Paraguay after General Alfredo Stroessner fell from power, and worked in numerous diplomatic posts, including the Paraguayan embassy in Buenos Aires. He also performed editorial work and gave recitals and conferences in various cultural centres around the Americas and Europe. Oscar Safuán
Oscar Nelson Safuán (21 September 1943 – 28 May 2007) was a Lebanese-Paraguayan composer. He was the creator and developer of the music genre called Avanzada. Career His first musical trio had the name of "Los Hijos del Paraguay" ("The Children of Paraguay"). Towards the end of 1962, the group left to Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil. Once located there, they started a series of presentations at some of the local restaurants, which allowed them to cover their daily expenses. From Foz do Iguaçu, they went to Curitiba, capital of the Paraná state. With an improvised album, made of eight pictures taken at a nearby lab in the bus terminal, they left to look for a job in the big city. Neneco Norton
Elio Ramon Gonzalez (December 8, 1923 – March 9, 2013), better known as Neneco Norton, was a Paraguayan musician, composer and orchestra director. Norton was born in 1923 in Asuncion, Paraguay on December 8, the day of the festival of the Virgin of Caacupé, an important date for Paraguayans. His parents were Apolonio Benitez and Hermelinda Gonzalez. Early career Neneco got his start in music when he played trumpet in the battalion band of the Rojas Silva battalion of Salesianito, a private school in Asuncion. His lessons in elementary music theory were taken with Ernesto Pérez Acosta. He learned theory and higher sight-reading with maestro Jose de Jesus Villalba, and then studied harmony with Professor Otakar Platill. While in the Rojas Silva battalion, he formed a musical group. Efrén Echeverría
Efren Echeverria (4 March 1932 – 19 June 2018) was a Paraguayan musician guitarist, composer, and compiler. Childhood and Youth When Efren was nine years old, a neighbor, Eusebio Cantero, taught him the first chords on guitar. With him, he learned the authentic pieces of folk repertoire of anonymous authors. Thus, from an early age, Paraguayan music became familiar to him; therefore to own a guitar became a passionate desire of his childhood. And not a long time passed until the desired instrument came to his life. Juan Cancio Barreto
Juan Cancio Barreto is a Paraguayan musician. Beginnings Barreto was born in Asunción, Paraguay on March 27, 1950. Son of Carmen Emategui and Rodolfo Barreto. He began to play the guitar at age 7, when a friend of his father, called Dario Duarte, also a musician, gave him a small guitar (requinto). His father showed him the basics and later a neighbour, Eufrasio Riveros, taught him to play. since then he never stopped playing that beautiful instrument. At the age of 11, he met Efrén Echeverría, who became his teacher and inspired him to love and appreciate the folklore of Paraguay and particularly its music. Augusto Roa Bastos
Augusto Roa Bastos (13 June 1917 – 26 April 2005) was a Paraguayan novelist and short story writer. As a teenager he fought in the Chaco War between Paraguay and Bolivia, and he later worked as a journalist, screenwriter and professor. He is best known for his complex novel ''Yo el Supremo'' ('' I the Supreme'') and for winning the '' Premio Miguel de Cervantes'' in 1989, Spanish literature's most prestigious prize. ''Yo el Supremo'' explores the dictations and inner thoughts of José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia, the eccentric dictator of Paraguay who ruled with an iron fist, from 1814 until his death in 1840. Roa Bastos' life and writing were marked by experience with dictatorial military regimes. Maneco Galeano ( Puerto Pinasco, May 13, 1945 - Paraguay), was a Paraguayan musician, songwriter and journalist. Childhood and youth Son of W. Antonio Galeano and Ana Mieres, his real name was Felix, after his grandfather on his father side, and Roberto, after his grandfather, on his mother side. He was two years when the cruel civil war of `47 started. Mauricio Cardozo Ocampo
Mauricio Cardozo Ocampo (May 14, 1907 – May 5, 1982) was the main reference of the so-called "golden generation" of the Paraguayan popular music and a strict studious of the Paraguayan folk music. Biography He was born in Ybycuí on May 14, 1907, son of Crescencia Cardozo Caballero. He started his music education with the flute player Eloy Martín Pérez, in his home town. He continued his studies with Juan J. Rojas and the first instruments that he played were the flute and the guitar. Eladio Martínez
Eladio Martínez was born in Paraguarí, Paraguay, on May 19, 1912, son of Lorenzo Martínez and Nicolasa Benítez. He belonged to a family of musicians. His father was a bandleader of a group formed entirely by his relatives in Villarrica. Childhood and youth Initially learn to play the flute and later the guitar, an instrument that he used to play fluently, although his most remarkable contribution to the music was as singer and composer. Florentín Giménez
Florentín Giménez (14 March 1925 – 11 March 2021) was a Paraguayan pianist and composer. Biography Giménez was born in Ybycuí, Paraguarí Department. In his teens, he learned to play the drums and became a member of the Orchestra of Popular Music, directed by Severo Rodas. In 1945, at the age of 20, he learned to play the piano and became a pianist in Ramón Reyes’ Orchestra, where he stayed until 1947, when the Paraguayan Civil War forced him to leave the country and settle in Argentina. After the war, he returned to Paraguay and formed his first orchestra, “Ritmos de América” (America’s Rhythms).
