Younghusband, South Australia
Younghusband is a small settlement on the left bank of the lower Murray River in South Australia near Mannum. There are views of Lake Carlet from the cliffs near the caravan park. The historic Wilhaven house in East Front Road is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. Younghusband is not near the similarly named Younghusband Peninsula near the Murray Mouth Murray Mouth is the point at which the River Murray meets the Southern Ocean. Mannum, South Australia
Mannum is a historic town on the west bank of the Murray River in South Australia, east of Adelaide. At the 2016 Australian census, 2016 census, the urban area of Mannum had a population of 2,398. Mannum is the seat of the Mid Murray Council, and is situated in the state electoral district of Hammond and the federal Division of Barker. History The Aboriginal Australians, Aboriginal inhabitants and traditional owners of the vicinity now called Mannum were the Nganguruku (Nganguruga), part of the larger Ngayawung community. In 1830 the Charles Sturt, Sturt expedition passed through the area by boat. No Europeans visited again until 25 January 1838 when the expedition of Dr George Imlay and John Hill (explorer), John Hill, on horseback from Adelaide, became the first to reach the Murray River, Murray overland within South Australia. Cowirra, South Australia
Cowirra is a locality in the Murraylands region of South Australia. It is on the left (east) bank of the Murray River, opposite Mannum. Geography Much of the river frontage is low-lying flats, laid out as long, narrow, irrigated paddocks between the river and the rising ground (or low cliffs) to the east. Cowirra includes the eastern landing points of the Mannum ferries, and the area known as Mannum East. The higher ground is used for a variety of farming activities, including sheep, grain, beef cattle and potatoes. Downstream of the ferry landing is a separate locality named Bolto, consisting mainly of shacks near the river bank. History The township of Cowirra was laid out and named in 1901. Ten quarter-acre blocks sold for an average of 5 shillings above the reserve price of £2 10/ in April 1907. The boundaries of the locality were formalised in 2003. Younghusband Peninsula
Younghusband Peninsula is a long narrow peninsula in South Australia. It separates the Coorong Channel, the Tauwitchere Channel and the Coorong which are part of the estuary of the River Murray from the Southern Ocean which including water bodies such as Encounter and Lacepede Bays. It lies entirely within the Coorong National Park. The peninsula is over long, but less than wide at its widest point. Its narrowest point is less than wide. Burdett, South Australia
Burdett is a locality in South Australia located on the eastern side (left bank) of the Murray River about to the east of the city of Murray Bridge and about east south-east of the Adelaide city centre. Its name is derived from the Hundred of Burdett. While the name has been "long established," Burdett's current boundaries were established in 2000. The land within Burdett is used for agricultural purposes with the exception of the Australian Army field training area, the Murray Bridge Training Area, which occupies about of land at the locality's southern boundary. The Karoonda Highway passes through the locality on its way to Loxton. Burdett is located within the federal Division of Barker, the electoral district of Hammond and the local government areas of the Mid Murray Council and the Rural City of Murray Bridge. Hammond is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. It is named after Ruby Hammond, the first indigenous woman to stand for the Federal Parliament. Hammond is a rural electorate east and south-east of Adelaide, covering in the east and upper south-east of the state, and takes in the towns of Callington, Cambrai, Coomandook, Karoonda, Langhorne Creek, Mannum, Nildottie, Peake, Pinnaroo, Purnong and Tailem Bend. Hammond was created in the 1994 redistribution as a replacement for the electoral district of Ridley, and was first contested at the 1997 election.
