Young Shire
Young Shire was a local government area in the South West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia. The Shire was located adjacent to the Olympic Highway. Young Shire was created on 1 July 1980 from the amalgamation of the Municipality of Young with the surrounding Burrangong Shire. The Shire included the town of Young and the small towns of Maimuru, Milvale, Thuddungra, Bribbaree, Monteagle, Wirrimah, Bendick Murrell, Koorawatha and Murringo. In 2016, Young Shire was amalgamated into Hilltops Council. The last Mayor of Young Shire Council was Cr. Brian Ingram, an independent politician. Council Composition and election method At the time of dissolution, Young Shire Council was composed of nine Councillors elected proportionally as one entire ward. Single Transferable Vote
Single transferable vote (STV) is a multi-winner electoral system in which voters cast a single vote in the form of a ranked-choice ballot. Voters have the option to rank candidates, and their vote may be transferred according to alternate preferences if their preferred candidate is eliminated, so that their vote is used to elect someone they prefer over others in the running. Hilltops Council is a local government area in the South West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia. This area was formed on 12 May 2016 from the merger of Boorowa Council, Harden Shire and Young Shire. The local government area covers much the same area as the Hilltops wine region. The Mayor of Hilltops Council is Margaret Roles, an independent politician, who was elected unopposed after the inaugural election held on 4 December 2021. Murringo, New South Wales
Murringo is a small village in the southwestern slopes of New South Wales, Australia in Hilltops Council. It was once better known as Marengo. History The area now known as Murringo lies on the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri people, close to the boundaries with the lands of the Ngunawal and Gandangara peoples. The Ngunawal and Gandangara peoples spoke closely related, if not identical, languages. Although the area was outside the Nineteen Counties, within which settler colonisation was allowed, it was settled relatively early, with the Marengo Station run taken up in 1827. There were 43 settlers on three properties in the area by 1840, 21 of whom lived at the Marengo Station.McHarg, p. 29. The village was known originally as Marengo. Koorawatha, New South Wales
Koorawatha is a town in the South West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia, on the Olympic Highway between Cowra and Young. It was once a large and thriving centre of activity but now has only a hotel and a cafe. The Koorawatha Hotel has a long narrow bar and keen-eyed patrons may notice that there is a rather elongated-looking wombat on top of the ‘fridge. At the 2016 census, Koorawatha had a population of 427, which had grown to 450 at the 2021 census. The town's name is derived from an Aboriginal word for "pine trees". Koorawatha is located near the Illunie Range which contains the Koorawatha Nature Reserve, an important tract of virgin bushland.
