''You Are Me'' (French: ''Toi, c'est moi'') is a 1936 French musical comedy film directed by René Guissart (director), René Guissart and starring Jacques Pills, Georges Tabet, and Claude May.Oscherwitz & Higgins p.159 It is an operetta film based on a stage work of the same title. Pills and Tabet were paired in another film ''On the Road (1936 film), On the Road'', released the same year. The film's sets were designed by the art director René Renoux. René Guissart (director)
René Guissart (24 October 1888 – 19 May 1960) was a French film director and cinematographer. During the 1920s and 1930s he worked as cinematographer on many British films many of them for British International Pictures. He also worked on MGM's 1925 epic '' Ben-Hur''. From 1931 Guissart began directing and had made twenty eight films by 1939. Operetta Films
Operetta films (German: Operettenfilm) are a genre of musical films associated with, but not exclusive to, German language cinema. The genre began in the late 1920s, but its roots stretch back into the tradition of nineteenth century Viennese operettas. Although some silent films had based their plots on stage operettas, the genre was largely a result of the switch from silent to sound films. The 1929 film ''Melody of the Heart'', made by the German studio UFA, is credited as being the first "Operetta film". It had been intended as a silent film, but the dramatic arrival of sound forced its production to be switched. Its combination of music and dancing proved to be a successful formula, and it was followed by many similar films.
