''You're a Sap, Mr. Jap'' is a 1942 one-reel Popeye the Sailor animated cartoon short subject released by Paramount Pictures on August 7, 1942. It was the first cartoon short to be produced by Famous Studios. It is one of the best-known American propaganda during World War II, World War II propaganda cartoons. Plot The short opens with the song "You're a Sap, Mr. Jap", which the short is named after. Popeye is riding in his boat and looking around through his binoculars. Popeye spots a small Japanese boat, so he throws his anchor at the Japanese boat. A Japanese man is fishing on the boat, and another Japanese man comes out from inside the boat. They present Popeye with a peace treaty. As Popeye signs the treaty, the Japanese hit Popeye with a giant mallet. Popeye turns around and continues signing the treaty, and one of the Japanese men sticks a firecracker in a hole at the bottom of Popeye's shoe and blows on it, causing it to explode. Dan Gordon (animator)
Daniel Campbell Gordon (July 13, 1902 – August 13, 1970) was an American storyboard artist and film director, best known for his work at Famous Studios and Hanna-Barbera Productions. Gordon was one of Famous' first directors. He wrote and directed several ''Popeye the Sailor'' and '' Superman'' cartoons. Later, at Hanna-Barbera, Gordon worked on several cartoons featuring Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, and others. His younger brother, George Gordon, also worked for Hanna-Barbera. In the late 1940s, talking animals and teen humor were two of the most popular categories in the ever-growing world of comic books. The mast of a sailing vessel is a tall spar, or arrangement of spars, erected more or less vertically on the centre-line of a ship or boat. ''Der Fuehrer's Face'' (originally titled ''A Nightmare in Nutziland'' or ''Donald Duck in Nutziland'' ) is a 1943 American animated anti-Nazi propaganda short film produced by Walt Disney Productions, created in 1942 and released on January 1, 1943 by RKO Radio Pictures. The cartoon, which features Donald Duck in a nightmare setting working at a factory in Nazi Germany, was made in an effort to sell war bonds and is an example of American propaganda during World War II. The film was directed by Jack Kinney and written by Joe Grant and Dick Huemer. Spike Jones released a version of Oliver Wallace's theme for the short before the film was released. ''Seein' Red, White 'N' Blue'' is a 1943 American propaganda cartoon short featuring Popeye directed by Dan Gordon (animator), Dan Gordon. The cartoon revolves around Bluto trying to escape Conscription in the United States, the draft but ends up fighting alongside Popeye against some Japanese spies, Hirohito and Adolf Hitler. Plot While Bluto is busy at work in his stable he receives a letter calling him for his draft service in the Navy. Bluto is very reluctant to join in and pretends to be ill. ''Spinach Fer Britain'' is a 1943, anti-Nazi propaganda cartoon, produced by Famous Studios and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film centers around Popeye the Sailor trying to deliver a shipment of spinach to 10 Downing Street in London, while fighting off Nazi Kriegsmarine soldiers pursuing him in a U-boat. The short was released on January 22, 1943. ''Terror on the Midway'' (1942) is the ninth of seventeen animated Technicolor short films based upon the DC Comics character of Superman, originally created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. It was the final Paramount cartoon short by Fleischer Studios. The nine-minute short features Superman attempting to stop the chaos created when several circus animals escape their cages and restraints, including a giant gorilla named Gigantic. Fleischer Studios
Fleischer Studios () is an American animation studio founded in 1929 by brothers Max and Dave Fleischer, who ran the pioneering company from its inception until its acquisition by Paramount Pictures, the parent company and the distributor of its films. In its prime, Fleischer Studios was a premier producer of animated cartoons for theaters, with Walt Disney Productions being its chief competitor in the 1930s.
