Yorkville Records
Yorkville Records was a Canadian record label formed in 1966. The label, which itself was a subsidiary of the larger Arc Records, was founded by Arc Records president Phil Anderson originally under the name Yorktown Records. Initially, the record label almost exclusively distributed recordings by the garage rock band the Ugly Ducklings, which resulted in a string of national hits, including "Nothin'", "10:30 Train", and "She Ain't No Use to Me". When Yorktown migrated to Yorkville Records in late 1966, the company signed more musical artists, first earning a minor hit with the Stitch of Tyme's cover of "Got to Get You into My Life". Yorkville Records is considered the only record company established in Canada to dedicate its efforts specifically on material rooted in the musical genre of psychedelic rock, releasing additional records by the Quiet Jungle, the Sugar Shoppe, and Willapuss, among others. Barbra Amesbury
Barbra Amesbury (born 1948) is a Canadian philanthropist, singer-songwriter, composer and filmmaker, who had several Top 40 hits in Canada in the 1970s. Amesbury was the long-time partner of Canadian philanthropist Joan Chalmers until her death in 2016. Known as Bill Amesbury during her active musical career, Amesbury came out as transgender after leaving the music business. Music Amesbury's biggest hit was "Virginia (Touch Me Like You Do)", which was also the first single (1974) to be released on the Casablanca Records label, reaching #14 in Canada. The Ugly Ducklings
The Ugly Ducklings were a Canadian five-piece garage rock group based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, most notable during the mid-1960s. They released six singles in 1966 and 1967 on the Yorktown and Yorkville labels, and one album, ''Somewhere Outside'' in 1967. In the summer and fall of 1967, the band's fifth single "Gaslight" became a Top 40 hit across Canada, peaking at No. 17 on the RPM Chart, and reaching No. 1 on CHUM 1050 in Toronto on October 2 that year, displacing The Rolling Stones' two-sided hit, "Dandelion" b/w "We Love You". Their first three singles also made the local 1050 CHUM AM charts in Toronto. The Sugar Shoppe was a Canadians, Canadian sunshine pop vocal group who recorded in the late 1960s and featured actor Victor Garber. History The group was formed in Toronto by lead singer, songwriter and pianist Peter Mann. Born in New York City, he grew up in Miami, Florida, before working as an arrangement, arranger and relocating to Canada in 1965. The Quiet Jungle was a Canadian garage rock band formed in Toronto, Ontario, in 1965. At the beginning of the group's recording career, they achieved success with pop and novelty songs. Ocean (band)
Ocean was a Canadian gospel/soft rock band formed in 1970 in Toronto, Ontario. They are best known for their 1971 single "Put Your Hand in the Hand", penned by Jeff Jones and Gene MacLellan. The single sold over one million copies, earning a gold disc in the United States from the Recording Industry Association of America, on 3 May 1971. The single peaked at No. 2 on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot 100, and reached No. 4 on the ''Billboard'' Adult Contemporary chart. Heat Exchange (band)
Heat Exchange was a Canadian rock band who had evolved out of a late 1960s, blues quartet. They had a hit in Canada in 1972 with "Can You Tell Me". Nearly five decades later they would finally have their album released. Background They started out as Cloud, a four-man blues group that Neil Chapman had founded in the late 1960s. The lineup then was Neil Chapman on guitar, Marty Morin on Drums, Gord McKinnon on keyboards and Ralph Smith on bass. They later expanded the group by inviting in Craig Carmody on sax and flute and Mike Landford on vocals. Later they had to change their name due to another band with the similar name, The Clouds who had released an album. Thinking that the names were too similar, the name chosen was Heat exchange. Ronnie Hawkins
Ronald Cornett Hawkins (January 10, 1935 – May 29, 2022) was an American singer-songwriter, long based in Canada, whose career spanned more than half a century. His career began in Arkansas, United States, where he was born and raised. He found success in Ontario, Canada, and lived there for most of his life. He was highly influential in the establishment and evolution of rock music in Canada. Also known as "Rompin' Ronnie", "Mr. Dynamo" or "The Hawk", he was one of the key players in the 1960s rock scene in Toronto. He performed all across North America and recorded more than 25 albums. Brutus was a Canadian rock band formed in 1969 and active, with interruptions, between 1969 and 1978. History The original band consisted of Walter Zwolinski (then billed as "Wally Soul") as vocalist, Tom Wilson as bassist, Michael Magann on trumpet, Lance Wright on drums, Eldon "Sonny" Wingay on guitar, and Bill Robb on sax and trombone.
