York Railway Institute A.F.C.
York Railway Institute is a sports club in York, North Yorkshire, founded in 1886. The club plays football, rugby, tennis, and hockey. It is most notable for its football team, which won the Northern Counties East Division One championship during the 1987–88 season. History The club was formed as an association football club in 1886 by railway employees of the York railway station and were one of the first clubs to be formed in the city. York RI began playing sport at its current New Lane site in 1926. Success came first for the rugby section of the club who captured the Yorkshire Shield during the 1950s. However, by the 1970s, the football club had climbed up to the Yorkshire League system. York RI gained promotion from the third to second Yorkshire League during 1978–79, by capturing the championship. Two seasons later they gained promotion again, by finishing second in the league. Acomb, North Yorkshire
Acomb , is a village and suburb within the City of York unitary authority area, to the western side of York, England. It covers the site of the original village of the same name, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It is bordered by the suburbs of Holgate, to the east, Clifton, to the north and Woodthorpe to the south. The boundary to the west abuts the fields close to the A1237, York Outer Ring Road. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Acomb was incorporated into the City of York in 1934. Formerly a farming village, Acomb expanded over the centuries to become a dormitory area for workers in heavy industry, such as rail engineering, in the 19th and 20th centuries and more recently for a more diverse workforce. The Northern Counties East Football League is a semi-professional English football league. It has two divisions – Premier Division and Division One – which stand at the ninth and tenth levels of the football pyramid respectively. History The league was formed in 1982 following the merger of the Yorkshire League and Midland League. For its inaugural season, the league consisted of five divisions. Counties 4 Yorkshire is an English rugby union league at the tenth tier of the domestic competition for teams from Yorkshire. Club rugby in Yorkshire operates without promotion play-offs meaning that the top two teams are automatically promoted to Yorkshire 3 and the bottom two teams were relegated to Yorkshire 5 until the RFU made changes to the Yorkshire league structure. Each season a team from Counties 3 Yorkshire or Yorkshire 4 may be picked to take part in the RFU Junior Vase - a national competition for clubs at levels 9-12. For the 2017-18 season, Yorkshire 4 was broken up into two regional leagues - Yorkshire 4 (North West) and Yorkshire 4 (South East) - while Yorkshire 5 ceased to exist. Teams from both Yorkshire 4 and 5 were transferred into the regional divisions depending on location.
