SS Yongala
SS ''Yongala'' was a passenger and cargo ship that sank off Cape Bowling Green, Queensland, Australia on 23 March 1911. En route from Melbourne to Cairns she steamed into a cyclone and sank south of Townsville. All 122 aboard died, and traces of the ship were not found until days later, when cargo and wreckage began to wash ashore at Cape Bowling Green and at Cleveland Bay. It was believed that the hull of the ship had been ripped open by a submerged rock. The wreck, which has become a tourist attraction and dive site, was not found until 1958. Design and construction SS ''Yongala'' was a steel passenger and freight steamer built by Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd in Newcastle upon Tyne, England to special survey for the Adelaide Steamship Company, at a cost of £102,000. Yongala Lodge is a heritage-listed detached house at 11 Fryer Street, North Ward, City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Rooney Brothers and was built by the Rooney Brothers from to 1930s. It is also known as Lister Private Hospital, Matthew Rooney's Residence, and Nestle Private Hospital. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 August 1992. History The earliest section of this two-storeyed, former residence was erected between 1883 and 1887, on land acquired by Townsville builders and timber merchants John and Matthew Rooney, in mid-1883. In the late 1860s, Irish immigrants John and Jacob Rooney had established a building and timber-milling business at Maryborough, where later they were joined by their brother Matthew. Hundred Of Yongala
The Hundred of Yongala is a cadastral unit of hundred located in the Mid North of South Australia. It is one of the 12 hundreds of the County of Dalhousie and was proclaimed by Governor James Fergusson in 1871. The eponymous township of Yongala lies in the west of the hundred and the larger township of Peterborough in the north east. The locality of Sunnybrae occupies the remainder of the hundred. Local government The District Council of Yongala was established in 1883 bringing local government administration to the hundred for the first time. Shortly after, in 1886, the Corporate Town of Peterborough seceded from Yongala to directly represent the interests of the township of Peterborough in the hundred's north east. Yongala, South Australia
Yongala is a small town located in the state of South Australia, Australia. It has a population of approximately 240 people and is situated on the Clare-Peterborough Road (B79), 238 km (148 mi) from Adelaide, the state capital. History The Hundred of Yongala was proclaimed in the County of Dalhousie in 1871, one of the first of the twelve hundreds to be declared in that county, opening up the area for closer settlement and small-scale cultivation. The town was proclaimed on 23 May 1876. Within five years there was a population of 353 as developers anticipated the connection of a railway. Instead, the railway was built through the nearby town of Peterborough. The SS ''Yongala'' launched in 1903 and owned by the Adelaide Steamship Company was named after the town.
