Yoel Lerner
200px Yoel Lerner (1941 - July 2014) was a linguist, translator, educator, and Jewish terrorist, who was convicted of many crimes, including seeking to destroy the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. Personal life Lerner was born as "Joel Lerner" in 1941 in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in South Africa. In 1960, he immigrated to Israel, and studied at the Hebrew University, where he earned a BA in Hebrew and Semitic Philology. He became a student of Meir Kahane and a member of the Jewish Defense League; and later became an aide to Kahane. Mark Juergensmeyer (born 1940 in Carlinville, Illinois) is an American sociologist and scholar specialized in global studies and religious studies, and a writer best known for his studies on comparative religion, religious violence, and global religion. He is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Global Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and William F. Podlich Distinguished Fellow and Professor of Religious Studies at Claremont McKenna College. The Dome of the Rock ( ar, قبة الصخرة, Qubbat aṣ-Ṣakhra) is an Islamic shrine located on the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem, a site also known to Muslims as the ''al-Haram al-Sharif'' or the Al-Aqsa Compound. Its initial construction was undertaken by the Umayyad Caliphate on the orders of Abd al-Malik during the Second Fitna in 691–692 CE, and it has since been situated on top of the site of the Second Jewish Temple (built in to replace the destroyed Solomon's Temple), which was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE.
