Benjamin Franklin Yoakum
Benjamin Franklin Yoakum (August 20, 1859 – November 28, 1929) was an American railroad executive of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who attempted to join the Frisco and Rock Island Railroads into a great system stretching from Chicago to Mexico. In 1909, when Yoakum controlled 17,500 miles of railroad, ''Railway World'' magazine called him an "empire builder" who had done as much for the Southwest as legendary James J. Hill had done for the Northwest. Biography Yoakum was born near Tehuacana, Texas, on August 20, 1859 to Narcissa Teague and Franklin L. Yoakum. In 1879 at age twenty, he worked on the surveying gang for the International-Great Northern Railroad to Palestine, Texas. He later became a land speculator for Jay Gould. He drilled artesian wells in the Rio Grande Valley. In 1887, the town of Yoakum, Texas, was named for him. Charles Henderson Yoakum
Charles Henderson Yoakum (July 10, 1849 – January 1, 1909) was a U.S. Representative from Texas. Biography Born near Tehuacana, Lincoln (now Limestone) County, Texas, Yoakum attended Larissa College in Cherokee County and Cumberland College. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1874 and commenced practice in Emory, Texas. He served as prosecuting attorney for Rains County in 1876. He moved to Hunt County in 1883 and continued the practice of law in Greenville. He served as district attorney for the eighth judicial district 1886–1890. He served as member of the Texas Senate 1892–1896. Yoakum was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1895 – March 3, 1897). He continued the practice of law in Greenville, Texas, until 1900, when he moved to Los Angeles, California. He returned to Texas in 1904. He died in Fort Worth, Texas, January 1, 1909. Joseph Elmer Yoakum
Joseph Elmer Yoakum (c. February 22, 1891 – December 25, 1972) was an American self-taught painter. He was of African-American and possibly of Native American–descent, and was known for his landscape paintings in the outsider art-style. He was age 76 when he started to record his memories in the form of imaginary landscapes and produced over 2,000 drawings during the last decade of his life. Early life Joseph Elmer Yoakum's biographical information is difficult to verify but he also claimed to be of African, French, and Cherokee descent. New York Times critic Will Heinrich called his biography "tricky...It’s poorly documented, and the artist himself was not a reliable narrator." His birthdates have also been given as 1886, 1888, and 1891, and his Veteran's Administration record says he was born in Springfield, Missouri.
