Yixian Glazed Pottery Luohans
A set of life-size glazed pottery sculptures of luohans usually assigned to the period of the Liao dynasty (907–1125) was discovered in caves at I Chou (I-chou, Yizhou) in Yi xian or Yi County, Hebei (), south of Beijing, before World War I. They have been described as "one of the most important groups of ceramic sculpture in the world." They reached the international art market, and were bought for Western collections. At least eight statues were originally found, including one large fragment which was thought to have been destroyed in Berlin during World War II, but was rediscovered in the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, in 2001. In Buddhism, an ''arhat'' (Sanskrit: अर्हत्) or ''arahant'' (Pali: अरहन्त्, 𑀅𑀭𑀳𑀦𑁆𑀢𑁆) is one who has gained insight into the true nature of existence and has achieved ''Nirvana'' and liberated from the endless cycle of rebirth. The Jin dynasty (, ; ) or Jin State (; Jurchen: Anchun Gurun), officially known as the Great Jin (), was an imperial dynasty of China that existed between 1115 and 1234. William Watson ( – ) was a British art historian who was Professor of Chinese art and archaeology at the University of London. He was a leading member of the teams that organised the ''Genius of China'' exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1973 and the ''Great Japan Exhibition'', held in 1981–82. He made a major contribution to Japanese art studies in the UK. Early life Watson was born in Derby, England, but moved with his family to Brazil, where his father managed a sugar-making plant. Eighteen Arhats
The Eighteen Arhats (or Luohan) () are depicted in Chinese Buddhism as the original followers of Gautama Buddha (''arhat'') who have followed the Noble Eightfold Path and attained the four stages of enlightenment. They have reached the state of Nirvana and are free of worldly cravings. Sixteen Arhats
The Sixteen Arhats (Chinese language, Chinese: 十六羅漢, pinyin: ''Shíliù Luóhàn'', Romanization of Japanese, Rōmaji: ''Jūroku Rakan''; Classical Tibetan, Tibetan: གནས་བརྟན་བཅུ་དྲུག, "Neten Chudrug") are a group of legendary Arhats in Buddhism.
