Yirgalem Fisseha Mebrahtu
Yirgalem Fisseha Mebrahtu ( am, ይርጋለም ፍስሃ መብራቱ; born 1981) is an Eritreans, Eritrean poet, writer and journalist. In 2009, she was arrested by the Eritrean government and imprisoned. Since 2018, she has been living in exile in Munich with the support of the PEN Centre Germany, PEN Center Germany. Early life and career Born in 1981 in Adi Keyh, Yirgalem Fisseha Mebrahtu has written poetry since she was a child. From the mid-1990s, she has taken part in literary events, first at her school and later in private and state media. She founded the Adi Keyh Literature Club with other young writers, which was part of a network of similar groups perceived as reviving Eritrean literature. Until Press freedom in Eritrea, private media was banned in 2001, she worked as an independent journalist and published poems in literary magazines. Eritreans
Eritreans are the native inhabitants of Eritrea, as well as the global diaspora of Eritrea. Eritreans constitute several component ethnic groups, some of which are related to ethnic groups that make up the Ethiopian people in neighboring Ethiopia and people groups in other parts of the Horn of Africa. Nine of these component ethnic groups are officially recognized by the Government of Eritrea. The Eritrean national identity began to develop during the Scramble for Africa, when Italy claimed Eritrea as one of its colonies. This marked the establishment of Eritrea's present-day borders. Following Italy's defeat in World War II and the subsequent British administration of Eritrea, the former colony was federated with Ethiopia in 1952. (; also spelled Tigrigna) is an Ethio-Semitic language commonly spoken Eritrea and in northern Ethiopia's Tigray Region by the Tigrinya and Tigrayan peoples. It is also spoken by the global diaspora of these regions.
