54-40 (often stylized 54•40) is a Canadian alternative rock group from Tsawwassen, British Columbia. The band take their name from the slogan "54-40 or Fight!", coined to express the unsuccessful expansionist agenda of James K. Polk's presidency, which was intent upon controlling a contested U.S.-Canada border area in the Oregon boundary dispute. 54-40 has had a successful career, with four of their albums being certified Platinum in Canada. The band has been nominated for eight Juno Awards. Between 1996 and 2016, 54-40 were among the top 150 selling Canadian artists in Canada and among the top 50 selling Canadian bands in Canada. History Neil Osborne and Brad Merritt met in 1978 at South Delta High School in Tsawwassen, British Columbia. True North Records
True North Records is a Canadian independent record label. History True North Records was founded in Mississauga, Ontario in 1969 by Bernie Finkelstein. By 1971, True North was producing albums for various Canadian musicians, including Bruce Cockburn and Murray McLauchlan, which were then distributed by Columbia Records in Canada. The company also arranged US distribution for some of its artists. In December 2007, the company was acquired by an investment group led by Linus Entertainment with Finkelstein remaining as Chairman. David Robert Madison Genn is a Canadian musician, producer, and songwriter. He is a member of the rock group 54-40, and a former member of the Matthew Good Band. Early life Genn was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on 2 March 1969. He is the son of artist G Robert Genn. Career Dead Surf Kiss (DSK) Dave Genn was a member of Vancouver psychedelic, punk, hard rock, band Dead Surf Kiss, named after their love of The Grateful Dead, Surf music, and KISS. They had several releases, the first of which was titled "Narcotic Nevada" via Vancouver label "Onslot Music" in 1991. The album was produced by Dave Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy) and Dan Tanna. "Onslot Music" later signed a sub-distro deal in the USA with BMG Music. They played shows at Vancouver's Town Pump Cabaret. Matthew Good Band was a Canadian alternative rock band formed in Coquitlam, British Columbia in 1995. The band consisted of singer-songwriter/guitarist Matthew Good, guitarist/keyboardist Dave Genn, drummer Ian Browne and bassist Geoff Lloyd. Lloyd was replaced by Rich Priske in 1998. They became one of the most successful rock bands in Canada during the late 1990s and early 2000s, being nominated for 14 Juno Awards and winning the awards for " Best Group" and "Best Rock Album" (''Beautiful Midnight'') in 2000. The Warehouse Studio
The Warehouse Studio is a multi-media recording facility and photography studio in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, owned by Bryan Adams. Building Originally built by the Oppenheimer Brothers in June 1886 as Vancouver's first wholesale grocery business, it also served as Vancouver's City Hall after the city was decimated by fire. For most of its 115+ year history the building held a glass factory and storage warehouse for Pilkington Glass Company. The building later fell into terrible disrepair and became abandoned. In 1989 the property at 100-102 Powell St. was purchased by Bryan Adams. The building at 102 Powell was gutted and converted into a parking lot with green space hidden behind a street front facade. The 2nd building, the original Oppenheimer Warehouse on the corner was restored and converted into a three-storey state of the art studio.
