Yerba Buena Gardens Festival (also known as Yerba Buena Arts & Events, and YBGF) is an admission-free performing arts festival held in San Francisco, California. During the summer months, May to October, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival produces concerts and performances including music, dance, theater, circus and children's programs. All programs take place in the outdoor spaces of Yerba Buena Gardens in the South of Market, San Francisco district. History Yerba Buena Gardens Festival was founded in 2000 by Mario Garcia Durham with support from the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency in order to fulfill the cultural programming mission of the outdoor spaces at Yerba Buena Gardens. Yerba Buena Gardens
Yerba Buena Gardens is the name for two blocks of public parks located between Third and Fourth, Mission and Folsom Streets in downtown San Francisco, California. The first block bordered by Mission and Howard Streets was opened on October 11, 1993. The second block, between Howard and Folsom Streets, was opened in 1998, with a dedication to Martin Luther King Jr. by Mayor Willie Brown. A pedestrian bridge over Howard Street connects the two blocks, sitting on top of part of the Moscone Center convention center. The Yerba Buena Gardens were planned and built as the final centerpiece of the Yerba Buena Redevelopment Area which includes the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. San Francisco Redevelopment Agency
The San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA) was an urban renewal agency active from 1948 until 2012, with purpose to improve the urban landscape through "redesign, redevelopment, and rehabilitation" of specific areas of the city. SFRA demolished over 14,000 housing units in San Francisco between 1948 and 1976, claiming the agency was working on slum clearance and addressing urban "blight". They replaced the demolished units with newly built affordable housing, but was only able to replace a portion. Linda Lucero
Linda Zamora Lucero is an American artist, based in San Francisco. Lucero was a co-founder and former executive director of La Raza Graphics Center, also known as La Raza Silkscreen Center and La Raza Graphics, noted for producing silkscreen prints and posters by Chicano and Latino artists. Early life and education Lucero was born and raised in San Francisco. After graduating from Mission High School, Lucero attended City College of San Francisco and San Francisco State University. Career Lucero was the executive director of La Raza Graphics Center, founded in 1971, which later merged with the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts. San Francisco Symphony
The San Francisco Symphony (SFS), founded in 1911, is an American orchestra based in San Francisco, California. Since 1980 the orchestra has been resident at the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall in the city's Hayes Valley neighborhood. The San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra (founded in 1981) and the San Francisco Symphony Chorus (1972) are part of the organization. Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu
Nā Lei Hulu I Ka Wēkiu is a Hawaiian dance company or ''hālau hula'' led by ''kumu hula'' (hula master) Patrick Makuakāne. Makuakāne founded Nā Lei Hulu in San Francisco in 1985. As a young dancer in Hawai'i, he trained under kumu hula Robert Cazimero, a member of the musical duo The Brothers Cazimero. In 2003, Makuakāne completed intensive traditional hula training under Mae Kamāmalu Klein and earned the title of kumu hula. The dance company of about 25 women and 15 men has performed in many locations around the United States, including New York City, New Orleans, Honolulu, San Francisco, and Napa.
