Yehuda Weissenstein
Yehuda Weisenstein ( he, יהודה וינשטיין ; born 11 March 1955), known also as Moshe Yehuda Weinstein, is an Israeli former fencer. He competed in the individual foil event at the 1972 Summer Olympics when he was 17 years old. He was ranked fourth in his pool in round one with two wins (defeating American John Nonna and British fencer Graham Paul) and three losses and advanced to round two, where he lost all five bouts and was eliminated. He was among several Israeli team members that avoided being captured by terrorists in the Munich massacre. Foil (fencing)
A foil is one of the three weapons used in the sport of fencing, all of which are metal. It is flexible, rectangular in cross section, and weighs under a pound. As with the épée, points are only scored by contact with the tip, which, in electrically scored tournaments, is capped with a spring-loaded button to signal a touch. A foil fencer's uniform features the lamé (a vest, electrically wired to record valid hits). The 1972 Summer Olympics (), officially known as the Games of the XX Olympiad () and commonly known as Munich 1972 (german: München 1972), was an international multi-sport event held in Munich, West Germany, from 26 August to 11 September 1972. The event was overshadowed by the Munich massacre in the second week, in which eleven Israeli athletes and coaches and a West German police officer at Olympic village were killed by Palestinian Black September members. The motivation for the attack was the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The 1972 Summer Olympics were the second Summer Olympics to be held in Germany, after the 1936 Games in Berlin, which had taken place under the Nazi regime, and the most recent Olympics to be held in the country. John Nonna
John Michael Nonna (born July 8, 1948) is an American fencer and attorney. He currently serves as the Westchester County Attorney. Biography Nonna was born on July 8, 1948. He attended Regis High School in Manhattan, graduating in 1966. Nonna received his bachelor's degree from Princeton University in 1970. He competed in the individual and team foil events at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Nonna also qualified for the 1980 Olympic team but did not compete due to the Olympic Committee's boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russia. He was one of 461 athletes to receive a Congressional Gold Medal instead. He later became an attorney specializing in insurance law. He was mayor of Pleasantville, New York, from 1995 to 2003. Graham Paul
Graham René Paul (born 15 May 1947) is a retired British international fencer. Fencing career He competed at the 1968, 1972, 1976, and 1984 Summer Olympics. He represented England and won a gold medal in the team foil and a bronze medal in the individual foil, at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica. Four years later he repeated the success by winning another gold and bronze at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a six times British fencing champion, winning four foil titles and two épée titles at the British Fencing Championships, from 1966 to 1973. The Munich massacre was a terrorist attack carried out during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, by eight members of the Palestinian people, Palestinian militant organization Black September Organization, Black September, who infiltrated the Olympic Village, killed two members of the Israel at the 1972 Summer Olympics, Israeli Olympic team, and took nine others hostage. Black September called the operation "Iqrit and Kafr Bir'im, Biram", after two Palestinian Christians, Palestinian Christian villages whose inhabitants were expelled by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The Connollystraße is a street in the Olympic Village and student quarter of the Olympic Park Munich. Description The street was named in 1971 after James Brendan Connolly, the first Olympic champion of the modern era (1896). It leads from the Helene-Mayer-Ring to the Kusocinskidamm to Straßbergerstraße. The road is accessible on the surface for pedestrians and cyclists, underground for motorists.
