George Yeardley
Sir George Yeardley (1587 – November 13, 1627) was a planter and colonial governor of the colony of Virginia. He was also among the first slaveowners in Colonial America. A survivor of the Virginia Company of London's ill-fated Third Supply Mission, whose flagship, the ''Sea Venture'', was shipwrecked on Bermuda for ten months from 1609 to 1610, he is best remembered for presiding over the initial session of the first representative legislative body in Virginia in 1619. With representatives from throughout the settled portion of the colony, the group became known as the House of Burgesses. It has met continuously since, and is known in modern times as the Virginia General Assembly. Yeardley died in 1627. Martha Savory Yeardley
Martha Yeardley (née Savory, March 8, 1781 – May 8, 1851) was an English poet, Quaker minister, and author of educational works and travel literature. Life Martha Savory Yeardley was born in London on 8 March 1781 to Anna and Joseph Savory, the latter a Quaker goldsmith. She had two sisters and a brother, and three half-sisters from her father's second marriage to Mary Pryor after the death of Anna Savory in or around 1785. At one point, she and her siblings lived in Pentonville across the road from Charles Lamb. She was educated "at Frenchay" where many Quaker merchants were established. Her family's financial resources have been described as "ample." She published her first work, ''Inspiration, a Poetical Essay'', in 1805, followed by two other poetry collections before the end of the decade. John Yeardley
John Yeardley (3 January 1786 – 11 August 1858) was a Quaker missionary. He was the son of Joel and Frances Yeardley, small dairy farmers at Orgreave, near Rotherham, Yorkshire. John was admitted a member of the Society of Friends in his twentieth year, entered a manufactory in Barnsley, and married, in 1809, Elizabeth Dunn, a convinced Friend much his senior. He commenced preaching in 1815, moving from place to place in the northern counties. In 1821 Dunn died, and, led by a persistent "call," Yeardley decided to settle at Pyrmont in Germany, where a small body of Friends existed. For his subsistence he arranged to represent some merchants who imported linen yarn, and later on he commenced bleaching on his own account. His philanthropic labours included the establishment of schools and meetings for the young, and many notable persons, including the prince and princess of Prussia, came to hear him preach.
