Yazidis In Germany
Yazidis in Germany may refer to people born in or residing in Germany of Yazidi origin, an ethnic group or Kurdish group who are strictly endogamous. There is a large Yazidi community in Germany, estimated to be numbering around 60,000 - 120,000 people. This makes the German Yazidi community one of the largest in the Yazidi diaspora. Immigration history Many Yazidis fled to Germany during the 1990s fearing religious persecution in Turkey. The Yazidi population of Germany was around 20,000 in 1998. Many Yazidi intellectuals also fled during this time and now play a prominent role in Yazidi diaspora affairs and maintain connections with Yazidis in Iraq. Political activism In August 2014, German Yazidis held protests against the Islamic State and called for an immediate end of the Genocide of Yazidis by ISIL. Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate (german: Brandenburger Tor ) is an 18th-century neoclassical monument in Berlin, built on the orders of Prussian king Frederick William II after restoring the Orangist power by suppressing the Dutch popular unrest. Ali Atalan
Ali Atalan (born 5 January 1968 in Midyat) is a Kurdish-German politician of Yazidi faith. He is a former member of the Landtag of North Rhine-Westphalia with Die Linke in Germany, and the Turkish Parliament with the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). Early life and education Ali Atalan grew up in a Yazidi family and came to Germany in 1985. After completing his Abitur in 1997, he studied political science and sociology at the Ruhr University Bochum, where he graduated in 2004 with a Diplom in social science. Political career In Dülmen, Atalan belonged to the social committee of the city council from 1990 until 1994. Yazidi Diaspora
Yazidis or Yezidis (; ku, ئێزیدی, translit=Êzidî) are a Kurmanji-speaking endogamous minority group who are indigenous to Kurdistan, a geographical region in Western Asia that includes parts of Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iran. The majority of Yazidis remaining in the Middle East today live in Iraq, primarily in the governorates of Nineveh and Duhok. There is a disagreement among scholars and in Yazidi circles on whether the Yazidi people are a distinct ethnoreligious group or a religious sub-group of the Kurds, an Iranic ethnic group. Yazidism is the ethnic religion of the Yazidi people and is monotheistic in nature, having roots in a pre-Zoroastrian Iranic faith. Christianity is the largest religion in Germany. It was introduced to the area of modern Germany by 300 AD, while parts of that area belonged to the Roman Empire, and later, when Franks and other Germanic tribes converted to Christianity from the fifth century onwards. The Yazidi Academy (german: Jesidische Akademie) is a non-profit organisation and learned society based in Hanover, Germany. The organisation was founded in 2009, it concerns itself with the historical and current situation of the Yazidis. Since then, it has also published the German-language magazine ''Zeitschrift der Ezidischen Akademie. Forum für Diskussionsbeiträge zum Ezidentum''. Khanna Omarkhali, also ''Khanna Usoyan'' (; russian: Ханна Рзаевна Омархали, also ; born 15 March 1981, Armenian SSR) is a Yezidi-Kurdish religion researcher. Nadia Murad
Nadia Murad Basee Taha (; ar, نادية مراد باسي طه; born 10 March 1993) is an Iraqi Yazidis, Yazidi Human rights activists, human rights activist who lives in Germany. In 2014, she was kidnapped from her hometown Kocho, Iraq, Kocho and held by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, Islamic State for three months. Murad is the founder of Nadia's Initiative, an organization dedicated to "helping women and children victimized by genocides, Mass Atrocity crimes, mass atrocities, and human trafficking to heal and rebuild their lives and communities". Feleknas Uca
Feleknas Uca (born 17 September 1976) is a Turkish politician of Kurdish descent. From 1999 to 2009, she was member of the European Parliament from Germany, serving with Die Linke. Feleknas Uca was at one time the world's only Yazidi parliamentarian until the Iraqi legislature was elected in 2005. In June 2015, she was elected as a Member of Parliament in Turkey representing Diyarbakır. Life and work Feleknas Uca was born in Celle, Lower Saxony, West Germany to an immigrant Yazidi family originally from Turkey. She graduated from Comprehensive School in Celle before taking an apprenticeship as a doctor's assistant, and completed her ''Abitur'' by distance learning. In 2010 she established the Feleknas Uca Foundation which focuses of the women and children rights. Uca was also the local spokesperson for representative of Terre des Femmes.
