Yaxley is a village and civil parish in the Huntingdonshire district in Cambridgeshire, England. Yaxley lies approximately south of Peterborough, just off the A15 road. The village is located near the Hampton township, and is approximately three miles north-east of junction 16 of the A1(M) at Norman Cross. Yaxley, Suffolk
Yaxley is a small village just west of Eye in Suffolk, England. The name means 'cuckoo-clearing'. Church of St. Mary Pevsner describes the north porch of the 12th-century church as 'one of the most swagger in Suffolk'. Inside the church are the remnants of a large medieval doom painting and high on the wall above the door hangs a Sexton's Wheel. This curious survival, is a device consisting of two wheels, 2 feet 8 inches in diameter, revolving on a single axle. Many theories have been proposed for use of the wheels, including the idea that they were used purely as ornaments for church doors. It has also been suggested that those wishing to fast, in honour of the Virgin Mary, from one of the six Lady Days, could choose one at random by catching one of six strings attached to named spokes. Francis Yaxley
Francis Yaxley (died 1565) was an English politician and conspirator. Life Yaxley was the eldest son of Richard Yaxley of Mellis, Suffolk, by his wife Anne, daughter of Roger Austin of Earlsham, Suffolk. The family were settled at Yaxley Hall, near Eye, Suffolk, where the descendants of Richard's uncle, John Yaxley, a serjeant-at-law in the reign of Henry VII, lived until the eighteenth century. Richard Yaxley has been confused by David Elisha Davy with his physician half-brother, Robert Yaxley, M.D. Francis owed his introduction at court to William Cecil; about 1547 he obtained employment by the privy council, possibly in the signet office, and in September 1548 he was engaged in hiring Italian mercenaries for service in England. In 1550 he was sent to Italy to complete his diplomatic education, and was attached to the embassy of Peter Vannes. John Yaxley
John Yaxley (died c. 1625) was an English lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons of England, House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Cambridge (UK Parliament constituency), Cambridge between 1597 and 1611. Career Yaxley probably entered Gray's Inn in 1573. He became an attorney in Cambridge and acquired an estate at Waterbeach, 6 miles (9.7 km) to the north. By 1597, Yaxley was an alderman of Cambridge, and in the same year he was elected Member of Parliament for the city. He was Mayor of Cambridge in 1599–1600. He was re-elected as MP for Cambridge in 1601 and again in 1604. While an MP, Yaxley was appointed to various committees in the House. Lands By 1610, Yaxley was steward of the manor of Waterbeach-cum-Denny. in 1614 he and Edward Aungier of Cambridge purchased the manors of Waterbeach and Causeway from the Crown for £900. John Francis Yaxley (born 13 November 1936 in Birmingham, England) is a former civil servant in the UK Colonial Office. After beginning his career in the Pacific Islands, Yaxley occupied a number of senior roles with the administration of British Hong Kong, which culminated in his appointment as Hong Kong Commissioner in London. Early life Yaxley studied at Durham University. He belonged to Hatfield College. After graduating with a degree in Geography he completed two years of national service in the Royal Army Educational Corps, being appointed 2nd Lieutenant (on probation) 25 August 1958. He joined the Overseas Civil Service in 1961. Career Yaxley served in Vanuatu (formerly The New Hebrides) and the Solomon Islands (formerly The British Solomon Islands Protectorate). Larry George "Peter" Yaxley (12 July 1928 – 3 March 2015) was a New Zealand rugby league player and referee. He played at stand off. Playing career Yaxley played for Sydenham in the Canterbury Rugby League competition. He was part of the side that won four consecutive titles between 1953 and 1956 and two Thacker Shields in 1955 and 1956. Yaxley also represented Canterbury, including in an 18-all draw with Auckland in 1955. Group Captain Robert Gordon Yaxley, (1912 – 3 June 1943) was a Royal Air Force pilot and commander during the Second World War. Early life Yaxley was born in Bath, Somerset, the son of Robert and Agnes Elizabeth Yaxley. After attending the Royal Air Force College Cranwell, he commissioned into the Royal Air Force (RAF) on 4 September 1934, with seniority of 28 July 1934. RAF career Yaxley served with the No. 2 Armoured Car Company RAF in the 1936–39 Arab revolt in Palestine, and was awarded the Military Cross on 6 November 1936. He had been promoted to the rank of flying officer on 28 January 1936. At the beginning of the Second World War, Yaxley was serving with No. 252 Squadron RAF and by December 1940 he was the unit's Commanding Officer. At the 1988 Seoul Games, she won a gold medal in the Women's 100 m Freestyle C6 and a silver medal in the Women's 50 m Backstroke C6. Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon (born 27 November 1982), better known as Tommy Robinson, is a British far-right, Islamophobic activist, and convicted criminal on multiple counts of violence and fraud as well as other crimes.
