Yavuz (drillship)
''Yavuz'', ex ''Deepsea Metro I'', is a Turkey-flagged ultra deepwater drillship owned and operated by the state-owned Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO). She is Turkey's second drillship. Name Yavuz means "Resolute" in Turkish. The three drillships of the state-owned Turkish gas company, Fatih, Yavuz and Kanuni, are named after the most famous conquerors and rulers of the Ottoman Empire: Mehmed I, Turkish: Fatih Sultan Mehmet, Mehmed the Conqueror, who conquered Constantinople in 1453; Selim I (r. 1512-1520), known as Selim the Resolute, Turkish: Yavuz Sultan Selim, who hugely expanded his empire; and Suleiman the Magnificent (r. 1520-1566), known in Turkish as Kanunî Sultan Süleyman ("the Lawgiver"), under whom the empire reached its apex. A drillship is a merchant vessel designed for use in exploratory offshore drilling of new oil and gas wells or for scientific drilling purposes. ''Abdülhamid Han'' (ex ''Cobalt Explorer'') is a Turkey-flagged seventh-generation ultra deepwater drillship owned and operated by the Turkish Petroleum Corporation. She is Turkey's fourth drillship. History The US oil and gas company Vantage Drilling International ordered the construction of the drillship in 2013, and prepaid US$59.5 million. She was built in 2014 by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) at its shipyard in Okpo, Geoje, South Korea, and christened ''Cobalt Explorer''. In August 2015, the construction deal was terminated by DSME due to contract breach by Vantage Drilling. The ship was worth about US$600 million at that time. Yalova is a market-gardening town located in northwestern Turkey on the eastern coast of the Sea of Marmara.
