Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter
Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter () is a typhoon shelter located near Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon, Hong Kong. History The Government of Hong Kong planned for the construction of a second typhoon shelter after Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter in late 1906. In 1908 the Works Department decided to construct the typhoon shelter at Yau Ma Tei. Works on the typhoon shelter lasted from 1910 to 1915. The cost was HK$2.21 million. The typhoon shelter was officially opened by Sir Francis Henry May, then Governor of Hong Kong, on 16 December 1915. The Yau Ma Tei Boat People settled in the shelter from around 1916 to 1990. The West Kowloon Reclamation Project began in 1990 as part of the Airport Core Programme, which required a replacement for the original typhoon shelter. The new typhoon shelter was built to the west of the original one, and was completed in 1992. West Kowloon () is the western part of Kowloon Peninsula in Hong Kong, situated within the Yau Tsim Mong District and Sham Shui Po District. It is bounded by Canton Road to the east, Victoria Harbour to the west and the south, and Jordan Road to the north. Further to the north, the area extends to Tai Kok Tsui to the west of the West Kowloon Highway. Nam Cheong, Olympic, Austin and Kowloon stations are within the area. It is principally a stretch of reclaimed land, which was subsequently developed in the late 20th century. Royal Asiatic Society Hong Kong Branch is an organisation to encourage interest in Asia broadly, with an emphasis on Hong Kong. The society was founded in 1847 and folded 1859. 1908 Hong Kong Typhoon
The 1908 Hong Kong Typhoon which occurred on the night of 27 to 28 July 1908 caused substantial loss of life and property damage. The most notable occurrence of the event was the loss of the SS ''Ying King'' (英京號), a steamship, which sank while trying to seek shelter from the storm; 421 people onboard died when the ship sank as well as the tremendous property damages and drowning cases on land flooding. In the initial reports, about one thousand people were estimated to have drowned, more than 20 houses collapsed, and most of the Hong Kong wharf facilities were damaged. As a result of this catastrophe, additional safety and shelter measures were undertaken, which includes the construction of a second typhoon shelter in Hong Kong harbour. Yau Ma Tei is an area in the Yau Tsim Mong District in the south of the Kowloon Peninsula in Hong Kong. Name ''Yau Ma Tei'' is a phonetic transliteration of the name (originally written as ) in Cantonese. It can also be spelt as Yaumatei, Yau Ma Ti, Yaumati or Yau-ma-Tee. Charming Garden () is a Home Ownership Scheme and Private Sector Participation Scheme court in Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong, built on reclaimed land of the old Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter. Airport Core Programme
The Airport Core Programme was a series of infrastructure projects centred on the new Hong Kong International Airport during the early 1990s. The programme was part of the Port and Airport Development Strategy, commonly known as the Rose Garden Project. The cost for the whole project was estimated at over HK$200 billion, and the Chinese Government was concerned about its impact on the financial reserve of the future Hong Kong SAR Government. Several changes were made to the plan, including the shortening of the Tsing Ma Bridge and the construction of the Airport Railway as a double-track railway. The project ended up costing HK$160.2 billion. Yau Ma Tei boat people refers to those who lived in the Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter, Kowloon, Hong Kong from around 1916 to 1990. Yau Ma Tei boat people mainly consisted of Tanka people. In the 1980s many families moved to Public housing in Hong Kong, public housing on land under a special Hong Kong Housing Authority, Housing Authority scheme.
