Yatay Medal
The Yatay Medal was an Uruguayan military decoration granted by the Uruguayan government to honor the Uruguayan allied forces who participated in the Battle of Yatay, part of the Paraguayan War. Characteristics It was minted by Juan Welker in Montevideo. The oval-shaped medal is of 34 by 28.5 millimeters (with a variant of 33.5 by 28.5 millimeters), on whose obverse it depicts the text "Vencedores del Yatay" ("Victorious in Yatay") and on its reverse the text "17 de Agosto de 1865" ("17 August 1865"), trimmed around it with two branches of Laurus nobilis, laurel. It was coined in gold for Chiefs, in silver for Officers and in copper for the troop. The medal hangs from a white and sky-blue ribbon, and it was placed on the chest. This decoration also was granted along with a diploma. The Ministry of National Defense of Uruguay is a ministry of the Government of Uruguay that is responsible for coordinating and executing all civil and military activities aimed at preserving the sovereignty, independence and the peace of the country. Venancio Flores Barrios (18 May 1808 – 19 February 1868) was a Uruguayan political leader and general. Flores was President of Uruguay from 1854 to 1855 (interim) and from 1865 to 1868. Background and early career In 1839, he was made political chief of the department of San José. He fought in the "Guerra Grande" against Manuel Oribe and his Argentine backers. In the Paraguayan War, the Battle of Yatay was fought on August 17, 1865, between the troops of the Triple Alliance (Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay) and the soldiers of Paraguay near Paso de los Libres, Corrientes, Argentina. The Battle of Yatay was the first major land battle of the Paraguayan War, and most important of the war's second phase. Paraguayan War
The Paraguayan War, also known as the War of the Triple Alliance, was a South American war that lasted from 1864 to 1870.
