Norma Alvares is an Indian lawyer, social worker and environmental activist. Biography Born in a Mangalorean Catholic family, she graduated in law from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai and entered environmental activism. Norma Alvares is married to Claude Alvares, another Mangalorean Catholic activist and the couple currently lives in Parra, Goa with their three children, Rahul, Samir and Milind. Under the aegis of the Goa Foundation that was started by her husband, she initiated a public interest litigation (PIL) in 1987 to save the sand dunes of Goa, the first ever PIL filed in the state. Phyllis Faria (1924-2018) was an Indian politician and nominated MLA of the Goa Legislative Assembly. She also served as the President of the Mapusa Municipal Council. Nishtha Desai
Nishtha Desai is an Indian scholar who has worked towards improving conditions for children in Goa, India. Education and career Desai has a Ph.D. from Goa University where she researched Tristão de Bragança Cunha, a Goan nationalist and anti-colonial activist. Desai worked with a children's organization in Goa which aims to improve their condition, and in 2012, she was the director. Jayanti Naik
Dr. Jayanti Naik (born 6 August 1962) from Amona in the Quepem taluka of Goa, is a Konkani writer and folklore researcher from Goa. She is a short story writer, dramatist, children's writer, folklorist, translator and was the first person to earn a doctorate from the Goa University's Department of Konkani. She is also a Sahitya Akademi award winner. In her career of some three decades, she has produced on average, a book a year.
