Yarra Pygmy Perch
The Yarra pygmy perch (''Nannoperca obscura'') is a species of temperate perch that is endemic to southeastern Australia. Distribution ''Nannoperca obscura'' occurs in the coastal drainages of southeastern Australia, preferring streams and lakes with plentiful vegetation and flowing water. It is found only in the southeastern portion of South Australia south of Adelaide, and extending along southern Victoria some way past Melbourne. The species was first reported in the lower Murray reaches in South Australia in 2002. Carl Benjamin Klunzinger
Carl Benjamin Klunzinger (18 November 1834, in Güglingen – 21 June 1914, in Stuttgart) was a German physician and zoologist. He studied medicine at the Universities of Tübingen and Würzburg, afterwards attending lectures on geology and zoology in Vienna and Prague. In 1862 he traveled to Cairo, where he spent eighteen months learning Arabic. Beginning in February 1864 he worked as a physician at Kosseir, a seaport on the Red Sea. Here he spent five years collecting a vast quantity of fish and other marine specimens. From 1869 he examined his Red Sea collection at the '' Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart'', traveling to Frankfurt and Berlin in order to conduct zoological comparison studies. Freshwater fish of Australia are limited to approximately 280 species, even though the Australian continent is larger than the contiguous United States. The small scale of species found in Australian inland waters is in some part due to the dry conditions of the continent. Hindmarsh Island (Ngarrindjeri: Kumerangk) is an inland river island located in the lower Murray River near the town of Goolwa, South Australia, Goolwa, South Australia.
