Yap Day
Yap Day is a legal holiday in Yap State, one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), held annually on March 1. It is a celebration of traditional Yapese culture. Common activities held during this time include competitions and traditional dances. History In 1968, the Yap Islands Congress created ''Yap District Day'' to preserve Yapese culture. The date March 1 was chosen because it was considered the "most pleasant" season of the year because of its dryness. The event's name was changed to ''Yap Day'' in March 1979. In 1990, Yap Day activities included running, bicycling, juggling, tug of war, coconut husking, and basket weaving. Five dances were also held. Most of these activities and dances were aimed at preserving the culture of Yap properly. In 1999, Yap Day was held as a three-day celebration starting on February 28. Yap Women's Association
Yap Women's Association is a women's rights organisation in Yap State, in the Federated States of Micronesia. Founded in 1955 as a non-profit it works to provide resources for women in the state. Background The YAP Women's Association was founded in 1955 as a non-profit initiative to represent the women's groups in Yap State. One of its founders was nurse and activist Anna Falgog, who brought together women who worked in government to set up a women's group. Programmes The YWA acts as an intermediary between the national government and local groups. As reported in 1992, the YWA could provide catering and dancers for events targeted at tourists. In 1995 the YWA supported the Pacific Islands Association of Libraries and Archives Conference, represented by Laura Tiningdad. Yap State
Yap State, also known in the Yapese language as Nam nu Wa'ab (lit. "Island of Yap") or simply as Wa'ab, is one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). The other states are Kosrae State, Pohnpei State, and Chuuk State. Colonia is the capital of Yap State, which administers both the Yap Main Islands and the island of Satawal, as well as fourteen atolls reaching to the east and south for some . Yapese People
The Yapese people are a Micronesian ethnic group native to the main island of Yap. Yapese culture is built on the maxim: Respect and Responsibility. Aspects of traditional Yapese culture are still important in modern Yapese culture. History Before coming into contact with Europeans, the Yapese people were familiar with surrounding island groups. Yapese sailors traveled to Palau to quarry stones. Carolinian people visited Yap during times of crises. Spanish and German traders colonized Yap in 1885 and started converting the people to Christianity. The Japanese navy took control of Yap in 1914. Micronesian Games
The Micronesian Games (or Micro Games, MicroGames) are a quadrennial international multi-sport event within the Micronesian region. The Games were first held in 1969 in Saipan (Northern Mariana Islands). The 2010 Micronesian Games were initially due to be held in Majuro (Marshall Islands), until the hosts withdrew. The 2010 Games were hosted by Palau. The Federated States of Micronesia won the bidding to host the 2014 Micronesian Games in Pohnpei State, and later won again against CNMI for the 2018 Micronesian Games to be held in Yap State.
