Yankton, South Dakota
Yankton is a city in and the county seat of Yankton County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 15,411 at the 2020 census, and it is the principal city of the Yankton Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the entirety of Yankton County and which had an estimated population of 23,297 as of July 1, 2021. As the first capital of Dakota Territory, it was named after the Yankton tribe of Western Dakota people; Yankton is derived from the Dakota word ''I-hank-ton-wan'' ("the end village"). Thomas John Brokaw (; born February 6, 1940) is an American retired network television journalist and author. He first served as the co-anchor of ''The Today Show'' from 1976 to 1981 with Jane Pauley, then as the anchor and managing editor of ''NBC Nightly News'' for 22 years (1982–2004). Ray Hamann
Raymond Henry Hamann (August 19, 1911 – May 7, 2005) was an American professional basketball player and college coach. By playing in the National Basketball League for the Oshkosh All-Stars during the 1937–38 and 1938–39 seasons, Hamann became the first South Dakotan to play organized professional basketball. He also competed for the All-Stars when they were a barnstorming independent team. Hamann played college basketball at Wisconsin from 1932–33 to 1934–35 and helped guide the Badgers to a co-conference championship as a senior. During his professional career he coached basketball at Kimberly and Appleton high schools. He served in the Navy during World War II. When he returned, Hamann earned a master's degree from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, while also serving as their head men's basketball coach from 1942–43 to 1944–45. Colton Miller Iverson (born June 29, 1989) is an American professional basketball player for the Akita Northern Happinets of the Japanese B.League. He played college basketball for the University of Minnesota and Colorado State. College career Iverson, a 7'0" center, attended Yankton High School in Yankton, South Dakota and originally chose to play basketball at the University of Minnesota for coach Tubby Smith. Layne R. Somsen (born June 5, 1989) is currently the starting left fielder for Crow Bar Softball in Sioux Falls, SD. He is a former American professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Cincinnati Reds in 2016. Career Amateur career Somsen attended Yankton High School and South Dakota State University, where he played college baseball for the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. In his senior season in 2013, Somsen pitched to a 1.87 earned run average and was named the Summit League Pitcher of the Year. Somsen finished his career ranking in the top five in school history in starts (38), innings pitched (215), and strikeouts (180).
