Kumi Yamashita
Yamashita Kumi is a Japanese artist based in New York. She was born in 1968 in Takasaki, Japan, and then relocated to the United States in high school as part of an exchange student program. Yamashita received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1994 from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington and completed her Master of Fine Arts in 1999 from the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. The artist is best known for her light and shadow sculptures constructed from everyday objects. Kumi first starts with photographing real models to begin understanding the different poses she works with. She expresses the importance of shadow manipulation and outline. Yamashita Shintarō
(29 August 1881 – 11 April 1966) was a Japanese yōga painter. Biography Born in Tokyo, the eldest son in a family of picture framers, Yamashita Shintarō's schooling included English and Classical Chinese. He went on to study under Fujishima Takeji and Kuroda Seiki at Tokyo School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1904. After learning French at the Tokyo School of Foreign Languages, in 1905 he travelled via America to France, where he studied with Raphaël Collin and Fernand Cormon and at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1907 he visited Spain, copying ''The Surrender of Breda'' by Velázquez, before returning to Paris via Granada and Seville. Yamashita Rin
was a painter of icons for the Japanese Orthodox Church. She was one of the first independent Japanese female artists, the first recognized female '' yōga'' painter. She studied in Russia, and her work can be found in over forty churches across Japan. Life Yamashita was born in 1857 to a samurai family in the Kasama Domain, in what is now Ibaraki Prefecture. Her family suffered hardship following her father's death in 1863. Aged 15 she ran away from home to avoid marriage to a farmer; after returning, she departed the following year to study painting in Tokyo.
