Yallah
Yallah is a western suburb in the City of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, located on the western shore of Lake Illawarra. It contains a mixture of rural, commercial and light industrial areas. Etymology ''Yallah'' is an Australian Aboriginal word for which a number of meanings are given; native apple tree; a nearby lagoon; and "go away at once". Developments The Tallawarra Power Station on the shores of Lake Illawarra and adjacent to Yallah was commissioned in 1952 and commenced operations in 1954 as a thermal power station. The station closed in 1989 and was reconditioned as a combined cycle natural gas power station. The Yallah railway station opened in 1887, and closed in 1974. The Princes Motorway southern terminus is located south of Yallah and north of , at the junction of the Princes Highway with the Illawarra Highway. Princes Motorway
The Princes Motorway is a predominantly dual carriage untolled motorway that links Sydney to Wollongong and further south through the Illawarra region to . Part of the Australian Highway 1 network, the motorway is designated with the route number M1. Tallawarra Power Station
Tallawarra Power Station is a combined cycle natural gas power station in the city of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. Owned and operated by EnergyAustralia, the station is the first of its type in New South Wales and produces electricity for the state during periods of high demand. It is located on the western shore of Lake Illawarra in the suburb of Yallah. The station comprises a gas turbine and a steam turbine unit and has a total capacity of . It uses many of the previous power station's structures including the cooling system channels from Lake Illawarra. The power station is connected to the state grid via a 132kV switching station maintained by Endeavour Energy (Previously known as Integral Energy). TRUenergy has also indicated that an additional power plant is being considered for the site, to be known as Tallawarra B. Avondale, New South Wales
Avondale is a village in New South Wales. It is located just west of Lake Illawarra. At the , it had a population of 1,653. History In the early days Avondale had some fine cedar trees. A creek flowing through the land grant 'Avondale' became known as 'American Creek' after the American cedar cutters who cleared the land along it. In 1857 some traces of kerosene were found in the creek and shale was found on the mountain. In 1863 Edward and William Graham rented part of the Avondale estate and their brother had shale from their farm tested by the Government Analyst. Dapto, New South Wales
Dapto is a suburb of Wollongong in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia, located on the western side of Lake Illawarra and covering an area 7.15 square kilometres in size. As at the , the suburb had a population of 10,730. History The name Dapto is said to be an Aboriginal word either from ''Dabpeto'' meaning "water plenty", or from ''tap-toe'' which described the way a lame Aboriginal elder walked. The suburb was officially founded in 1834, when George Brown transferred the Ship Inn from Wollongong to Mullet Creek Farm, in an area now named in his honour as Brownsville. After an unsuccessful attempt at wheat growing in the 1850s, Dapto embraced the dairy industry. In 1887 the railway opened and a butter factory was established. This began a transformation of Dapto and the town centre shifted south to where the new station was located. Marshall Mount, New South Wales
Marshall Mount is a suburb of Wollongong in New South Wales, Australia. It is located between the larger centres of Dapto and Albion Park. History In 1829 Henry Osborne, a wealthy Irish immigrant, was granted in the Dapto district known as Marshall Mount, where he settled with his wife Sarah Osborne (née Marshall) in 1833. By the 1840s Henry had added to his estate by securing Charles Throsby Smith's "Calderwood" , Elyard's " Avondale", William Browne's "Athanlin" (Yallah), Brook's "Exmouth" and numerous smaller grants. Marshall Mount was expanded to reach from Mullet Creek in the north to the Macquarie Rivulet in the south. In 1841, Marshall Mount House was completed as the Osborne's new residence and in 1843, Osborne held a cattle show at his property which led to the founding of the Illawarra Agricultural Association. Princes Highway is a major road in Australia, extending from Sydney via Melbourne to Adelaide through the states of New South Wales, Victoria (Australia), Victoria and South Australia. Albion Park Rail, New South Wales
Albion Park Rail is a suburb of Shellharbour, Australia situated in the Macquarie Valley (Shellharbour). The South Coast railway line was opened to the railway station and Bombo in 1887. At the time the nearest town was Albion Park, several kilometres away. Over time, houses were built around the railway station, and Albion Park Rail developed into a town in its own right, and with its own name.
