The Yale Steam Laundry is a historic residence located on 437–443 New York Avenue, Northwest, Washington, D.C., in the Mount Vernon Square neighborhood. History The original Yale Steam Laundry complex includes three, Neo-Renaissance, and Colonial Revival facilities built in 1902, 1919, and 1924, to the designs of architect Alfred B. Mullett and Thomas Francis, Jr. The laundry closed in 1976. The building was redeveloped as condominiums by Scott Fuller, designed by architect John Ronan John Ronan is an American architect, designer and educator based in Chicago, in the United States. Mount Vernon Square is a city square and neighborhood in the Northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C. The square is located where the following streets would otherwise intersect: Massachusetts Avenue NW, New York Avenue NW, K Street NW, and 8th Street NW. Manhattan Laundry is a complex of historic buildings located in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. History The complex originally housed the traction facility for a streetcar company. The oldest building on the site, the west building at 1346 Florida Ave, was built in 1877. The complex became a printing plant in 1892 and it was converted into a laundry in 1905. It is part of the expansion of Washington's urban core and industrial development along Florida Avenue.
