Yakumo Town Museum
opened in Yakumo, Hokkaidō, Japan in 1978. Its origins lie in a room for the display of historical materials established in 1952 in the old public hall, superseded in 1965 by storage facilities and an exhibition space in the new public hall. The display is organized around three main themes: history and the land, the Hokkaido Development Commission and the lives of the people, and local industries, including mining and the craft of '' kibori-guma'', a museum of which lies next door. The collection of over thirteen thousand objects includes a Jōmon red ceramic vessel with spout from the Nodaoi I Site and an assemblage of artefacts from the Jōmon Kotan Onsen Site that has been designated an Important Cultural Property. Yakumo, Hokkaido
is a town in Oshima Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. As of September 2016, the town's population was estimated as 17,299, with a density of 18 persons per km2. The total area is 955.98 km2. On October 1, 2005, the town of Kumaishi was merged into Yakumo; now in the newly created Futami District. The former town of Kumaishi joined Oshima Subprefecture at the same time. Geography Yakumo is the only municipality which faces both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. The Yakumo area and the Kumaishi area are separated by mountains. Kibori Kuma
''Kibori kuma'' ( ja, 木彫り熊) is a Japanese rural craft that consists of a wooden carving of a bear with a fish in its mouth. The sculptures are mainly produced in Hokkaido; small carvings are sold as souvenirs of the island. The most common design depicts a brown bear biting a chum salmon, and the sculptor portrays the bear's thick bristles by using an axe. However, many variations of the ''kibori kuma'' have evolved. Origins , the 19th leader of the Owari branch, purchased a wooden carving of a bear while he was in Bern, Switzerland; Tokugawa was traveling through Europe between 1921 and 1922.
