Yakey Yakes
The Yakey Yakes was a 19th-century street gang, prominent in New York's underworld during the late 1890s and early 1900s. Based in the neighborhood of Catherine and Madison Streets, the gang were formed by Yakey Yake Brady in the 1890s and later participated in the gang war between Monk Eastman and Paul Kelly. Rivals of the Cherry Hill Gang, eight members were arrested in connection with the murder of rival Jimmy Brennan on the night of January 11, 1905. One of the gang members, Thomas "Nine-Eyed" Donegan, later admitted to have taken part in Brennan's murder, shooting him three times. However, members Robert Ginan and John Dalton ("Kid" or "Brady") were held in custody while the others were released under subpoenas. Madison Street (Manhattan)
Madison Street is a two-way thoroughfare in the Lower East Side of the New York City borough of Manhattan that begins under the Brooklyn Bridge entrance ramp and ends at Grand Street. It is roughly sixteen large city blocks long. Due to security measures implemented after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, public access to the part of the street before St. James Place is restricted. The character of Madison Street changes from block to block. There are housing projects east of Pike Street. Between Catherine Street and Pike Street the street is residential, dominated by mostly tenements. The street is considered one of the southern boundaries of Chinatown. Yakey Yake Brady
John or James "Yakey Yake" Brady (1875 – September 2, 1904) was an American criminal, the founder and leader of the Yakey Yakes, an independent street gang based in Manhattan, New York at the turn of the 20th century. Under his leadership, the gang, which had its base around the Brooklyn Bridge, operated freely within the territory of the Eastman Gang and successfully fought off attempts by both the Eastmans and the Five Points Gang to absorb the Yakey Yakes into either organization. Edward "Monk" Eastman (1875 – December 26, 1920) was a New York City gangster who founded and led the Eastman Gang in the late 19th and early 20th century; it became one of the most powerful street gangs in the city. His aliases included Joseph "Joe" Morris, Joe Marvin, William "Bill" Delaney, and Edward "Eddie" Delaney. Eastman is considered to be one of the last of the 19th-century New York City gangsters who preceded the rise of Arnold Rothstein and the Jewish mob. Paul Kelly (criminal)
Paul Kelly (born Paolo Antonio Vaccarelli; December 23, 1876 – April 3, 1936) was an Italian American mobster and former boxer, who founded the Five Points Gang in New York City. He had started some brothels with prize money earned in boxing. Five Points Gang was one of the first dominant street gangs in New York history. Kelly recruited young, poor men from the ethnically diverse immigrant neighborhoods of Lower Manhattan. The Five Points Gang included some who later became prominent criminals in their own right, including Johnny Torrio, Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky and Frankie Yale. At the peak of his criminal career, Kelly was ranked by ''The New York Times'' in 1912 as "perhaps the most successful and the most influential gangster in New York history". Cherry Hill Gang
The Cherry Hill Gang was a New York street gang during the late nineteenth century. Formed in the 1890s, the Cherry Hill Gang were known as the "dandies" of New York's underworld. Often wearing dress suits and armed with metal-weighted walking sticks, gang members were able to attack and rob wealthier victims surprising those who would have been suspicious of other poorer gangs of the period. Throughout the decade, rival gangs would attempt to compete with the gang's success. One incident in particular occurred when, after the Batavia Street Gang announced hosting a party at New Irving Hall, the Cherry Hillers planned to arrive in expensive wardrobe.
