''Yahudi'' (), is a 1958 Hindi-language action drama film directed by Bimal Roy. It starred Dilip Kumar, Meena Kumari, Sohrab Modi, Nazir Hussain, Nigar Sultana and others. It was based on the play ''Yahudi Ki Ladki'' by Agha Hashar Kashmiri, a classic in Parsi-Urdu theatre, about persecution of Jews in the Roman Empire. Although, not very well received critically, the film was a big hit despite its alien theme, and was the third-highest grossing Indian film of 1958, owing to the box office draw of Dilip Kumar. The film's lyricist Shailendra won the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist at the 6th ceremony, for the song "Yeh Mera Diwanapan Hai", sung by Mukesh. The plot bears similarities to Jacques Fromental Halévy's opera La Juive. The story revolves around the life of a foster relationship. ''Yahudi Ki Ladki'' (The Jew's Daughter) is a historical Urdu play by Agha Hashar Kashmiri, on the theme of persecution of Jews by the Romans. It was first published in 1913. The play became his best known work, and a classic in Parsi-Urdu theatre. The play was originally inspired by and adapted from W.T. Moncrieff's 19th century play, ''The Jewess'', and uses a mixture of Urdu, Khari Boli and even Braj Bhasha at places. Adaptations The play was adapted several times in India, in the silent films, the early talkies era and later, attesting to its popularity. Notably the play was made into a film '' Yahudi Ki Ladki'' (1933) by New Theatres Ltd. Calcutta, directed by Premankur Atorthy and starring K. L. Saigal. It was made into a film again in 1956 by Nanubhai Vakil, in 1957 by S. D. 6th Filmfare Awards
The 6th Filmfare Awards were held in 10 May 1959, at Bombay, honoring the best films in Hindi Cinema for the year 1958. ''Madhumati'' led the ceremony with 12 nominations, followed by ''Sadhna'' with 6 nominations. ''Madhumati'' won 9 awards – a record at the time – including Best Film, Best Director (for Bimal Roy) and Best Supporting Actor (for Johnny Walker), thus becoming the most-awarded film at the ceremony. Ramayan Tiwari was a Bollywood actor who was more famous by his surname Tiwari. He worked in approximately 125 movies in his 36 year long film career. Meena Kumari
Meena Kumari (born Mahjabeen Bano; 1 August 1933 – 31 March 1972) was an Indian actress and poet, who worked in Hindi films. Popularly known as ''The Tragedy Queen'', she was active between 1939 and 1972. Kumari is widely considered one of the greatest actress of Indian cinema. In a career spanning 33 years, she starred in over 90 films until her premature death in 1972. Meena Kumari won four Filmfare Awards in the Best Actress category. Wajahat Hussain Mirza Changezi ( hi, वजाहत मिर्ज़ा; 20 April 1908 – 4 August 1990) was an Indian screenwriter and film director who penned the dialogues of some of the most successful films in India during the 1950s and 1960s, best known for ''Mughal-e-Azam'' (1960) and the Academy Award-nominee, ''Mother India'' (1957). Mukesh Chand Mathur (22 July 1923 – 27 August 1976), better known mononymously as Mukesh, was an Indian playback singer. Mukesh is considered to be one of the most popular and acclaimed playback singers of the Hindi film industry. Amongst the numerous nominations and awards he won, his song "Kai Baar Yuhi Dekha Hai" from the film ''Rajnigandha'' (1973) won him the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer. Nigar Sultana (21 June 1932 – 21 April 2000) was an Indian actress who worked in Hindi films. Shailendra (30 August 1923 – 14 December 1966) was a popular Indian Hindi-Urdu Poet, lyricist and film producer. Noted for his association with the filmmaker Raj Kapoor, singer Mukesh, and the composers Shankar–Jaikishan, he wrote lyrics for several successful Hindi film songs in the 1950s and the 1960s. Biography Shankardas Kesarilal - Shailendra was born in Rawalpindi, Punjab - now in Pakistan. His ancestors belonged to Ara district of Bihar. He was born into a Chamar family, and lost his mother and sister at a young age. Nabendu Ghosh
Nabendu Ghosh (27 March 1917 – 15 December 2007) was an Indian author in Bengali literature, and screenwriter. He has written screenplays of classic Bollywood movies like, Sujata, Bandini, Devdas, Majhli Didi, Abhimaan and Teesri Kasam. He has written stories for movies like Baap Beti, Shatranj, Raja Jani.
