Xiyu, Penghu
Xiyu Township (; Pha̍k-fa-sṳ: ''Sî-yí-hiông'') is a rural township encompassing Xiyu/Si Island/Hsi Island, also known as Fisher Island, Yuweng or Pescadores Island (), which is among the three major islands of the Penghu County (the Pescadores), Taiwan. It has a population of 8,438 and an area of 18.7148 square kilometres. The major scenic spots include some forts and lighthouse. They were built or reconstructed in the Qing Dynasty, and were credited as National Relic Site of Taiwan. History On July 16, 1683, the island was attacked by Qing forces in the Battle of Penghu. On March 10, 2012, President Ma Ying-jeou visited the area and participated in religious ceremonies at temples in the township. Township (Taiwan)
Townships are the third-level administrative subdivisions of counties of the Republic of China (Taiwan), along with county-administered cities. After World War II, the townships were established from the following conversions on the Japanese administrative divisions: Although local laws do not enforce strict standards for classifying them, generally urban townships have a larger population and more business and industry than rural townships, but not to the extent of county-administered cities. Under townships, there is still the village as the fourth or basic level of administration. As of 2022, there are totally 184 townships, including 38 urban townships, 122 rural townships and 24 mountain indigenous townships. 174 townships with 35 urban and 118 rural townships are located in Taiwan Province and 10 townships with 3 urban and 4 rural townships are located in Fujian Province. Taipei
Taipei (), officially Taipei City, is the capital and a special municipality of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Huang Ching-cheng
Huang Ching-cheng (; 1912–1943) was a Taiwanese sculptor. He is counted among the important pioneers of Taiwanese modern art. Lai Hsien-tsung mentions him in one breath with Ju Ming. Huang's sculpture "Study of a Head" (頭像 ‘tóuxiàng’) was the first modern work of art in Taiwan that was declared a part of the island's cultural heritage that is protected by a new law passed in 2009. It is exhibited in the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. Life and career Early life Huang was born in Chidong Village (池東村), Xiyu, Hōko Prefecture. This island group had been ceded to Japan by the Chinese government in 1895, like the rest of Taiwan and the Ryu-Kyo Islands, after the First Sino-Japanese War. Huang's father owned a pharmacy. Yuwengdao Lighthouse
The Yuwengdao Lighthouse or Yuwongdao Lighthouse, Fisher Island Lighthouse, Yuweng Tao Lighthouse, Yu-Won Island Lighthouse, West Island Lighthouse and Xiyu Lighthouse () is a lighthouse in Wai'an Village, Xiyu Township, Penghu County, Taiwan. The Yuwengdao Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Taiwan. History The Yuwengdao Lighthouse was built by British engineer, David Marr Henderson, in 1875 on the site of the earlier "Xiyu Pagoda Lighthouse" (Chinese: 西嶼塔燈; pinyin: Xīyǔ tǎdēng), which was originally built in 1778 during the Qianlong Emperor reign of Taiwan. The earlier Xiyu Pagoda Lighthouse structure was a stone tower with an oil lamp light source, and is mentioned on a stone stele that still stands within the grounds of the Yuwengdao Lighthouse. Whale Cave
The Whale Cave () is a wave-cut platform in Xiaomen Village, Xiyu Township, Penghu County, Taiwan. History The wave is originally a basalt cliffed coast. After being continuously eroded by monsoon and seawater, it finally became an arch. Geology The cave is located on Xiaomen Island. From the side, the hollow part roughly has the shape of a whale. Penghu Great Bridge
The Penghu Great Bridge or Penghu Trans-Oceanic Bridge () is a bridge in Penghu County, Taiwan. It connects Siyu Island and Baisha Main Island. History The idea of the bridge construction came after knowing the sea current between Siyu Island and Baisha Main Island was too harsh to sail. The construction of the bridge began in 1965 and was completed in 1970. The bridge was expanded in 1984 due to its erosion and collapse because of the sea wind. On 1 January 1996, it was re-inaugurated as a two-lane road bridge. Architecture The bridge was initially 2,478 meters long and 5.1 meters wide. After renovation and expansion, it is now 2,494 meters long and 13 meters wide. It has 7 emergency spaces along the path. Erkan Chen Residence
The Erkan Chen Residence () is a former residence in Erkan Village, Xiyu Township, Penghu County, Taiwan belongs to the Chen family. History The residence was built in 1910 by brother Chen Ling and Chen Bang with the cost around NT$8,000 to 9,000.
