Xanthosoma Caracu
''Xanthosoma caracu'' (yautia horqueta) is a species of edible plant described by Karl Koch and Carl David Bouché. It is native to South America and cultivated in Puerto Rico. Description ''Xanthosoma carau'' grows to between to in height. The leaves are bluish-green and glossy on top and pale underneath, growing up to long and wide. Toxicity The entire plant contains a toxin which requires it to be cooked before it can be safely eaten. Uses The corms and leaves are edible and are cultivated for food in Mexico, the Caribbean (including Puerto Rico) and northern South America. Karl Koch (botanist)
Karl Heinrich Emil Koch (6 June 1809 – 25 May 1879) was a German botanist. He is best known for his botanical explorations in the Caucasus region, including northeast Turkey. Most of his collections have today been lost. He is also known as the first professional horticultural officer in Germany. Biography He was born in Ettersburg near Weimar, Germany. He studied at the universities of Jena and Würzburg and taught, as privatdocent, at the University of Jena beginning 1834. He became an associate professor in 1836. He undertook a journey of research into southern Russia in 1836–38, and a second in 1843–44. ''Xanthosoma'' is a genus of flowering plants in the arum family, Araceae. The genus is native to tropical America but widely cultivated and naturalized in other tropical regions. Carl David Bouché
Carl David Bouché (4 June 1809 – 27 September 1881) was a German botanist and gardener. He served as Inspector (technical director) of the Royal Botanic Garden in Berlin from 1843 to 1881. Bouché described 107 plant species. Bouché was a member of a prominent family of botanists and gardeners. His grandfather, Jean David Bouché (1747–1819), a Berlin nurseryman of French origin, installed glasshouses which became popular with the Prussian nobility. His uncle, Peter Friedrich Bouché (1785–1856), and father Peter Karl Bouché (1783–1856) continued the business.
