X8 Protein Domain
In molecular biology, the X8 domain, is thought to play a role in targeting the plasmodesmata by providing it with structural support. The domain is able to do this since it contains signal sequences for a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) linkage to the extracellular face of the plasma membrane. This domain is involved in carbohydrate binding. Structure The X8 domain contains 6 conserved cysteine residues that presumably form three disulphide bridges. Plasmodesmata (singular: plasmodesma) are microscopic channels which traverse the cell walls of plant cells and some algal cells, enabling transport and communication between them. Plasmodesmata evolved independently in several lineages, and species that have these structures include members of the Charophyceae, Charales, Coleochaetales and Phaeophyceae (which are all algae), as well as all embryophytes, better known as land plants. Unlike animal cells, almost every plant cell is surrounded by a polysaccharide cell wall. In molecular biology, a protein domain is a region of a protein's polypeptide chain that is self-stabilizing and that folds independently from the rest. Glycosylphosphatidylinositol
Glycosylphosphatidylinositol (), or glycophosphatidylinositol, or GPI in short, is a phosphoglyceride that can be attached to the C-terminus of a protein during posttranslational modification. The resulting GPI-anchored proteins play key roles in a wide variety of biological processes.
