Xmortis
Xmortis is a monthly goth night held on the second Friday of the month in Cambridge, Massachusetts. History Xmortis was started in July 2004. The event was founded by Latex Lily and Patman the Avenger, who at the time were a longtime couple in the Boston goth scene. Their romance was featured in the Boston Globe. Xmortis' predecessor was a goth event called ''Hell'' (known for its catchy title; event-goers could say they were "going to Hell"). ''Hell'' was held monthly at Manray, Boston's best-known goth club, until the event ended in its 11th year. Xmortis continued the tradition at Manray until the club's close in July 2005. Xmortis was then moved across the street to the well-known rock club T.T. the Bear's Place. In July 2015 T.T.'s closed, and the event moved next door to the Middle East Downstairs, with DJ Chris Ewen of the Future Bible Heroes and a range of guest DJs. Manray
Manray is a nightclub in Central Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was named for Dada artist and photographer, Man Ray. Early days In 1983, Campus'','' a gay club, was built on a site previously occupied by Simeone's Restaurant. In 1985, the club was expanded under the moniker of Manray and its dance nights included a ''Campus'' event along with goth, new wave, industrial, and fetish nights. The club billed itself as an "art bar", and often featured gallery shows by local artists in its lounge area. Manray gained national attention when it was featured in ''Life Magazine.'' Culture Manray catered to a variety of alternative lifestyles. Its longest-running night was ''Campus'', a night "for gay men and their friends". Goth Subculture
Goth is a music-based subculture that began in the United Kingdom during the early 1980s. It was developed by fans of Gothic rock, an offshoot of the post-punk music genre. The name ''Goth'' was derived directly from the genre. Notable post-punk artists who presaged the gothic rock genre and helped develop and shape the subculture include: Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, the Cure, and Joy Division. The Middle East (nightclub)
The Middle East is an entertainment complex consisting of five adjacent dining and live music venues in the Central Square neighborhood of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Its three dedicated concert spaces, Upstairs, Downstairs, and Sonia, sit alongside ZuZu and The Corner, two restaurants that also host live music. Future Bible Heroes is an American indie pop group led by Stephin Merritt, best known for his work with The Magnetic Fields. Merritt shares vocal duties with fellow Magnetic Fields member Claudia Gonson, who sings on the entirety of 2002's ''Eternal Youth''. In contrast to much of Merritt's work with other groups, the Future Bible Heroes work largely on electronica-based disco, with music provided by Chris Ewen, formerly of Figures on a Beach.
