Xanthorhoe Semifissata
''Xanthorhoe semifissata'', commonly known as the ''Barred Pink Looper,'' is a moth of the family Geometridae. It is endemic to New Zealand and is found throughout the country although it is much less common in the mountains in the south and west of the South Island. The larvae host plants include ''Nasturtium officinale'' as well as species in the ''Cardamine'' genus. Adult moths inhabit shrubs at the edge of native forest. Taxonomy This species was first described by Francis Walker in 1862 using specimens collected in Nelson by T. R. Oxley and named ''Cohemia semifissata''. In 1939 Louis Beethoven Prout placed this species in the genus ''Larentia''. In 1971 J. S. Dugdale placed this species in the genus ''Helastia''. The genus ''Helastia'' was restricted by Craw in 1987 placing this species into the genus ''Xanthorhoe''. This placement was accepted in 1988 by Dugdale. Francis Walker (entomologist)
Francis Walker (31 July 1809 – 5 October 1874) was an English entomologist. He was born in Southgate, London, on 31 July 1809 and died at Wanstead, England on 5 October 1874. He was one of the most prolific authors in entomology, and stirred controversy during his later life as his publications resulted in a huge number of junior synonyms. However, his assiduous work on the collections of the British Museum had great significance. Between June 1848 and late 1873 Walker was contracted by John Edward Gray Director of the British Museum to catalogue their insects (except Coleoptera) that is Orthoptera, Neuroptera, Hemiptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera. Riccarton is a suburb of Christchurch. It is due west of the city centre, separated from it by Hagley Park. Upper Riccarton is to the west of Riccarton. History On 12 April 1840, the ship ''Sarah and Elizabeth'' landed Herriot, McGillivray, Ellis, Shaw (and wife) and McKinnon (with his wife and child) who established a farm at Riccarton. They were the first European settlers on the plains." In January 1841, they abandoned their attempt to farm in the area. Riccarton House was the homestead commissioned by Jane Deans in circa 1855. The Deans brothers, who along with the Gebbies and the Mansons were the second group of Europeans to settle in Christchurch on the same site as the first group in 1843. Arthur's Pass
Arthur's Pass, previously called Camping Flat then Bealey Flats, and for some time officially Arthurs Pass, is a township in the Southern Alps of the South Island of New Zealand, located in the Selwyn district. It is a popular base for exploring Arthur's Pass National Park. Arthur's Pass township is about south of the mountain pass with the same name. Its elevation is above sea level surrounded by beech forest. The Bealey River runs through the township. The town is located from Christchurch a 2-hour drive on State Highway 73. Louis Beethoven Prout
Louis Beethoven Prout (1864–1943) was an English entomologist and musicologist. Prout specialised in the insect order of Lepidoptera, especially the Geometridae, or geometer moths, on which he was a foremost authority. His notebooks and publications formed the basis of the Geometridae card indexes in the Natural History Museum, the then British Museum (Natural History). He was the secretary of the North London Natural History Society and worked in association with the Natural History Museum at Tring.
