Lloyd Herbert Shinners
Lloyd Herbert Shinners (September 22, 1918 – February 16, 1971) was a Canadian- American botanist and professor, known as an expert on the flora of Texas and Wisconsin. Early life Shinners was born in Bluesky, Alberta on September 22, 1918. His family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin when he was five, and he went on to graduate valedictorian from Lincoln High School. He continued his education at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he earned a Ph.D. under Norman Carter Fassett in 1943. He worked for the town of Milwaukee before moving to Dallas, Texas in 1945. Career Shinners worked for the Southern Methodist University as a research assistant, before being placed in charge of the university's herbarium. In 1960, he attained a full professorship. Through his guidance, the herbarium grew from 20,000 specimens to over 340,000. He was specifically interested in the Compositae. Otto Thomas Solbrig
Otto Thomas Solbrig (21 December 1930 – 8 April 2023) was an Argentine evolutionary biologist and botanist. His research dealt with ecology and biodiversity of the Argentine and Uruguayan Pampas, Cerrado and sustainable agriculture. Life and career Solbrig was born in Buenos Aires on 21 December 1930. In 1954, he received a biology degree at National University of La Plata and in 1959, he obtained a PhD in botany at University of California, Berkeley. He was emeritus professor of biology at Harvard University. Solbrig died on 8 April 2023, at the age of 92. He was a resident of Harvard, MA. Asteraceae
The family Asteraceae, alternatively Compositae, consists of over 32,000 known species of flowering plants in over 1,900 genera within the order Asterales. Commonly referred to as the aster, daisy, composite, or sunflower family, Compositae were first described in the year 1740. The number of species in Asteraceae is rivaled only by the Orchidaceae, and which is the larger family is unclear as the quantity of extant species in each family is unknown. Astereae
Astereae is a tribe of plants in the family Asteraceae that includes annuals, biennials, perennials, subshrubs, shrubs, and trees. They are found primarily in temperate regions of the world. Plants within the tribe are present nearly worldwide divided into over 250 genera and more than 3,100 species, making it the second-largest tribe in the family behind Senecioneae. The taxonomy of the tribe Astereae has been dramatically changed after both morphologic and molecular evidence suggested that large genera such as '' Aster'', as well as many others, needed to be separated into several genera or shifted to better reflect the plants' relationships. Plants are predominantly photosynthetic eukaryotes of the kingdom Plantae. Historically, the plant kingdom encompassed all living things that were not animals, and included algae and fungi; however, all current definitions of Plantae exclude the fungi and some algae, as well as the prokaryotes (the archaea and bacteria).
