XHTYL-FM
XHTYL-FM is a community radio station serving Monterrey, Nuevo León. It broadcasts with 600 watts of power on 98.5 MHz and is known as Radio Tierra y Libertad. XHTYL is a member of AMARC México. History The 1999 UNAM strike sowed the seeds for a number of community radio stations across Mexico, including XHTYL, XHECA-FM in Amecameca, and XHCD-FM in Hermosillo. During the strike, students operated a radio station known as "La Ke Huelga". The Asociación Civil Tierra y Libertad, a civil association founded in 1973 in response to illegal land seizures, began operating its community radio station in the summer of 2001. On June 6, 2008, the station was seized and taken off air by 150 members of the Mexican Federal Police, as it did not hold a permit to broadcast. 1999 UNAM Strike
The 1999–2000 strike and shutdown of the UNAM ( National Autonomous University of Mexico, the largest university in Latin America) had its origins in the January 1999 announcement by its latest rector that tuition would increase significantly and graduation requirements would become more restrictive. In response, a large group of students declared a strike and blockaded the main campus to the point of institutional paralysis. The blockades intensified and eventually led to the university's closure, during which there were violent encounters between opposition groups, students, guards and faculty. The crisis led to the eventual resignation of the university's rector and appointment of a new one. Along the way, bloody conflicts resulted in serious injuries and even fatalities on the unlawfully occupied campus. Amecameca
Amecameca is a municipality located in the eastern panhandle of Mexico State between Mexico City and the Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl volcanos of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
