XHSOS-FM is a radio station in Agua Prieta, Sonora, broadcasting on 97.3 FM. It is owned by Grupo Radiofónico ZER and airs a Regional Mexican format as La Ranchera 97.3. History The history of XHSOS begins on the AM band, with a station licensed to Naco. XETM on 1350 kHz was awarded to Jesús Manuel Franco Martínez on March 19, 1941. The station was originally licensed for operation at 1 kW day and night. Francisco Ernesto Ruiz, who would go on to become the Spanish radio play-by-play voice of the Houston Astros, was a disc jockey at XETM from 1972 to 1981. In 2000, XETM was sold to Arnoldo Rodríguez Zermeño, founder of Grupo ZER. Zermeño moved the station to El Sifón (with studios in Agua Prieta), changed its callsign to XESOS-AM and increased its power to 50 kW daytime on 670 kHz. Agua Prieta (English: ''Dark Water'', Opata: ''Bachicuy'') is a town in Agua Prieta Municipality in the northeastern corner of the Mexican state of Sonora. It stands on the Mexico–U.S. border, adjacent to the town of Douglas, Arizona. The municipality covers an area of 3,631.65 km2 (1,402.2 sq mi). In the 2010 census the town had a population of 79,138 people, making it the seventh-largest community in the state, and a literacy rate of 96.3%. 89% of the homes in the city have electricity, 94% have running water, and 86% are connected to the sewer system. Naco, Sonora
Naco is a Mexican town in Naco Municipality located in the northeast part of Sonora state on the border with the United States. It is directly across from the unincorporated town of Naco, Arizona. The name Naco comes from the Opata language and means prickly pear cactus. The town saw fighting during the Mexican Revolution and during a rebellion led by General José Gonzalo Escobar in 1929.
