Wyck (Maastricht)
Wyck (; li, Wiek ) is a neighbourhood in Maastricht, Netherlands comprising the eastern bank of the Meuse ( nl, Maas) in the city's historic centre. Areas The neighbourhood consists of three distinct parts: * ''Oud-Wyck'' ("Old Wyck"), comprising the oldest built-up area, until 1867 surrounded by Maastricht's Medieval city wall. * ''Stationsbuurt'' ("Station Neighbourhood"), the area west of the railway and Maastricht railway station, predominantly dating from the 19th century. * ''Céramique'', on the former factory grounds of Société Céramique south of Old Wyck, redeveloped during the 1990s/2000s. The area consists mostly of new-built apartment blocks, designed by international architects, and some restored factory buildings. The Bonnefantenmuseum, designed by Aldo Rossi, is a major landmark along the Meuse river. Though sometimes seen as a neighbourhood in itself, Céramique is officially part of Wyck. Beluga (restaurant)
Beluga is a restaurant on Plein 1992 in Maastricht, Netherlands. It is a fine dining restaurant that is awarded two Michelin stars from 2005 to 2019. It was awarded one Michelin star in the period 1998–2004 and 2020 to present.. In 2011, GaultMillau gave the restaurant a rating of 19.5 out of 20. The restaurant was established by chef Hans van Wolde in 1997. Originally it was located in Havenstraat in the old centre of Maastricht. ''Sint'' (released on DVD as ''Saint'' in Europe and ''Saint Nick'' in the United States) is a 2010 Dutch dark comedy horror film about Sinterklaas, the character on which the Anglo-Saxon Santa Claus is based. A rijksmonument (, ) is a national heritage site of the Netherlands, listed by the agency Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (RCE) acting for the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. At the end of February 2015, the Netherlands had 61,822 listed national heritage sites, of which approximately 1,500 are listed as archaeological sites. History and criteria Until 2012, a place had to be over 50 years old to be eligible for designation. This criterion expired on 1 January 2012. The current legislation governing the monuments is the ''Monumentenwet van 1988'' ("Monument Law of 1988"). Bonnefanten Museum
The Bonnefanten Museum is a museum of fine art in Maastricht, Netherlands. History The museum was founded in 1884 as the historical and archaeological museum of the Dutch province of Limburg. The name Bonnefanten Museum is derived from the French 'bons enfants' ('good children'), the popular name of a former convent that housed the museum from 1951 until 1978. In 1995, the museum moved to its present location, a former industrial site named 'Céramique'. The new building was designed by Italian architect Aldo Rossi. With its rocket-shaped cupola overlooking the river Maas, it is one of Maastricht's most prominent modern buildings. Since 1999, the museum has become exclusively an art museum. The historical and archaeological collections were housed elsewhere. The museum is largely funded by the province of Limburg. Aldo Rossi
Aldo Rossi (3 May 1931 – 4 September 1997) was an Italian architect and designer who achieved international recognition in four distinct areas: architectural theory, drawing and design and also product design. He was one of the leading exponents of the postmodern movement. He was the first Italian to receive the Pritzker Prize for architecture. Early life He was born in Milan, Italy. After early education by the Somascan Religious Order and then at Alessandro Volta College in Lecco in 1949, he went to the school of architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan. His thesis advisor was Piero Portaluppi and he graduated in 1958. In 1955, he had started writing for, and from 1959 was one of the editors of, the architectural magazine Casabella-Continuità, with the editor in chief Ernesto Nathan Rogers.
