Wouter Abts
Wouter Abts (in French, Gautier Abts) was born at Lier, near Antwerp, possibly in 1582. He was a pupil of Willem de Vos (Guillaume de Vos in French). Little is known about his life. Lier (; french: Lierre, ) is a municipality located in the Belgium, Belgian province of Antwerp (province), Antwerp. It is composed of the city of Lier proper and the village of Koningshooikt. The city centre is surrounded by the river ''Nete'', around which it grew. In 2018, Lier had a total population of 35,712. The total area is 49.70 km making a population density (PD) of 720 per km. Willem de Vos (c. 1593 – c. 1629) was a Flemish Baroque painter from Antwerp. Biography He was a nephew of the painter Maerten de Vos and his students included Justus Sustermans. Guild Of Saint Luke
The Guild of Saint Luke was the most common name for a city guild for painters and other artists in early modern Europe, especially in the Low Countries. They were named in honor of the Evangelist Luke, the patron saint of artists, who was identified by John of Damascus as having painted the Virgin's portrait. One of the most famous such organizations was founded in Antwerp. It continued to function until 1795, although by then it had lost its monopoly and therefore most of its power. In most cities, including Antwerp, the local government had given the Guild the power to regulate defined types of trade within the city. Guild membership, as a master, was therefore required for an artist to take on apprentices or to sell paintings to the public. Adriaen de Bie (3 October 1593 – 20 October 1668) was a Flemish painter, who is known for portraits, biblical scenes for churches and Italianate landscapes. In his youth he travelled to Paris and resided for a long period in Italy.
