WOSH (1490 AM) is a radio station serving the Oshkosh, Wisconsin area with a News/Talk format including the ABC News Radio network. This station is under ownership of Cumulus Media. The station began broadcasting on December 31, 1941. During the late 1960s until 1975, WOSH was the leading Top 40 radio station in the Appleton-Oshkosh market, with Jonathon Brandmeier as the station's star disc jockey. On August 1, 1975, AM 1490's callsign was changed from WOSH to WYTL, and its format changed from top 40 to modern country. This change was advertised as a "frequency swap" to listeners, where WYTL-FM "moved" along with its country format to AM 1490, and WOSH-AM "moved" to FM 103.9 with its top 40 format. Oshkosh, Wisconsin
Oshkosh is a city in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, of which it is the county seat. The city had a population of 66,816 in 2020, making it the ninth-largest city in Wisconsin. It is also adjacent to the Town of Oshkosh. History Oshkosh was named for Menominee Chief Oshkosh, whose name meant "claw" (cf. Ojibwe ''oshkanzh'', "the claw"). Although the fur trade attracted the first European settlers to the area as early as 1818, it never became a major player in the fur trade. The 1820s mining boom in southwest Wisconsin along with the opening of the Erie Canal shifted commercial activity away from the Fox River Valley and Green Bay. Soon after 1830, much of the trade moved west, as there had been over-trapping in the region. WWWX (96.9 FM, "96.9 The Fox") is an alternative rock formatted radio station licensed to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, that serves the Appleton- Oshkosh area. The station is owned by Cumulus Media. The station shares a transmitter site with WNAM located along I-41. History The station signed on January 30, 1967 as WMKC, operating on 96.7 FM under the ownership of Kimball Broadcasting. In 1968, the station became an affiliate of the ABC FM network. By 1971, WMKC had a middle of the road format, and devoted 20 hours a week to jazz music. The station changed its affiliation to the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1978; by then, programming also included three hours of classical music. Kimball Broadcasting, a subsidiary of the Miles Kimball mail order company, sold WMKC to Cummings Communications for $400,000 in 1980. Jonathon Brandmeier
Jonathon "Johnny B" Brandmeier (born July 15, 1956) is a Chicago radio personality and musician. Career Born John Francis Brandmeier to a German father and a Lebanese mother, Brandmeier started his radio career in 1973 at WFON in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. When he was 18 he joined WOSH in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, later working as a DJ at WYNE (now WHBY) in Appleton, Wisconsin, then at KLIV in San Jose, California, then as the morning jock at WYBR-FM (now WXRX) in Rockford, Illinois, and then in 1980 at WOKY in Milwaukee. In February 1981, he was brought on as the KZZP morning DJ in Phoenix, Arizona, where he participated in prank phone calls and silly song parodies. In 1982, Brandmeier released his first album ''Just Havin' Fun.'' WLUP ("The Loop") in Chicago hired him in 1983, where his morning show was broadcast on both the AM and FM stations. In the music industry, the Top 40 is the current, 40 most-popular songs in a particular genre. It is the best-selling or most frequently broadcast popular music. Record charts have traditionally consisted of a total of 40 songs. "Top 40" or " contemporary hit radio" is also a radio format. AM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation (AM) transmissions. It was the first method developed for making audio radio transmissions, and is still used worldwide, primarily for medium wave (also known as "AM band") transmissions, but also on the longwave and shortwave radio bands. WVBO (103.9 FM) is a classic hits formatted radio station licensed to Winneconne, Wisconsin, that serves the Appleton- Oshkosh area. The station is owned by Cumulus Media. History This station began broadcasting in the fall of 1966 as WOSH-FM from studios at 2333 Bowen Street, Oshkosh. Its first format included a range from musical comedy, show tunes, Broadway music, and "semi-classical" music. Early in the 1970s, WOSH-FM changed its call letters to WYTL, and adopted a modern country format. This was maintained until August 1, 1975, at which time 103.9 FM regained the WOSH callsign and changed format to top 40/contemporary hits.
