The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) is the principal organizing body of women's professional tennis. It governs the WTA Tour which is the worldwide professional tennis tour for women and was founded to create a better future for women's tennis. The WTA's corporate headquarters is in St. Petersburg, Florida, with its European headquarters in London and its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Beijing. The Women's Tennis Association was founded in June 1973 by Billie Jean King, and traces its origins to the inaugural Virginia Slims tournament, arranged by Gladys Heldman, sponsored by Joe Cullman, CEO of Philip Morris, and held on 23 September 1970 at the Houston Racquet Club in Houston, Texas. Rosie Casals won this first event. Jean-Pierre Samazeuilh, best known as Jean Samazeuilh (17 January 1891, Bordeaux – 13 April 1965, Mérignac) was a right-handed tennis player competing for France. Samazeuilh reached three singles finals at the Amateur French Championships, winning in 1921 over André Gobert. Samazeuilh also won the doubles title at the tournament in 1923, partnering François Blanchy. The French Tennis Federation (french: Fédération française de tennis, FFT) is the governing body for tennis in France. It was founded in 1920, and is tasked with the organisation, co-ordination and promotion of the sport. It is recognised by the International Tennis Federation and by the French Minister for Sports. Its headquarters are at the Roland Garros stadium. It was founded under the name ''Fédération Française de Lawn Tennis'' until it changed to the ''Fédération Française de Tennis'' in 1976. The Idaho Statesman
The ''Idaho Statesman'' is the daily newspaper of Boise, Idaho, in the western United States. It is owned by The McClatchy Company. History The paper was first published as the ''Idaho Tri-Weekly Statesman'' on July 26, 1864, by James S. Reynolds; it began publication from a log cabin on the current site of Boise City Hall. Reynolds owned and operated the paper for its first eight years, selling to Judge Milton Kelly in 1872. Kelly's 17-year run ended in 1888, with the expansion to daily publication, and a name change: The ''Idaho Daily Statesman''. That summer, Kelly sold the paper to the Cobb family, which went on to run the paper for 70 years. Calvin Cobb published the ''Statesman'' until his death in 1928, when control was transferred to his daughter Margaret Cobb Ailshie. Gordon Lowe
Sir Francis Gordon Lowe, 2nd Baronet (21 June 1884 – 17 May 1972) was a British male tennis player. Lowe is best remembered for winning the Australasian Championships in 1915 (where he beat champion Horace Rice in the final). and for winning the World Covered Court Championships (Indoor) in 1920. Lowe also won Queen's Club in 1912, 1913 and 1925. His father, Sir Francis Lowe, 1st Baronet, was a Member of Parliament, representing Birmingham Edgbaston. In 1929 Lowe became Sir Gordon Lowe, succeeding his father to the baronetcy. Gordon's brother Arthur Lowe was also a tennis player and another brother, John, played first-class cricket. He was ranked World No. 8 in 1914 by A. Wallis Myers of The Daily Telegraph. ''The Evening News'' was the first evening newspaper published in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was published from 29 July 1867 to 21 March 1931. The Sunday edition was published as the ''Sunday News''. History ''The Evening News'' was founded in 1867 by Samuel Bennett and was regarded as a "less serious read" than other Sydney newspapers. In 1875 labour difficulties forced Bennett to merge ''The Evening News'' with another of his papers, '' The Empire''.
