World Para Ice Hockey Championships
The World Para Ice Hockey Championships, known before 30 November 2016 as the IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships, are the world championships for sledge hockey. They are organised by the International Paralympic Committee through its World Para Ice Hockey subcommittee. The first sanctioned World Para Ice Hockey Championships were held in Nynäshamn, Sweden in 1996. On 30 November 2016, the IPC, which serves as the international governing body for 10 disability sports, adopted the "World Para" branding across all of those sports. At the same time, it changed the official name of the sport from "sledge hockey" to "Para Ice hockey". The name of the world championships was immediately changed to "World Para Ice Hockey Championships" (WPIHC). Sledge Hockey
Sledge hockey, also known as Sled hockey in American English, and Para ice hockey in international competition, is an adaptation of ice hockey for players who have a physical disability. The sport was invented in the early 1960s at a rehabilitation centre in Stockholm, Sweden, and played under similar rules to standard ice hockey. Players are seated on sleds and use special hockey sticks with metal "teeth" on the tips of their handles to navigate the ice. Playing venues use an ice hockey rink. While sledge hockey is a part of the Winter Paralympics programme, it only includes a category for men which doubles as a mixed-sex division, allowing only a limited number of female athletes to participate. A division devoted exclusively for women does not exist. Via its division World Para Ice Hockey, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) acts as the international sanctioning body for the sport. 2015 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships
The 2015 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships for A-Pool teams (Canada, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Russia, United States) was held at HarborCenter in Buffalo, New York, United States, from April 26 through May 3, 2015. This was the final time the event was known as the "IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships". On November 30, 2016, the International Paralympic Committee adopted the "World Para" brand across the ten sports it governs, the official name of the sport changed from "sledge hockey" to "Para ice hockey", and the event became the World Para Ice Hockey Championships. The 11th edition of World Para Ice Hockey Championships (originally named IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships) was held in 2021. The main event (Tournament A) was hosted by Ostrava, Czech Republic from 19 to 26 June 2021. It was the third time Ostrava hosted the Championships, previously hosting in 2019 and 2009. 2019 World Para Ice Hockey Championships
The 10th edition of World Para Ice Hockey Championships (originally named IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships) was held in 2019. The championships were divided into three tournaments. The main event (Tournament A) was hosted by Ostrava, Czech Republic The first matches were played on April 27 and the championships concluded with the final game played on May 4. It was the second time Ostrava World Para Ice Hockey Championships, as Ostrava hosted the Championships 10 years ago in 2009.
